Get married in Thailand, on whichever coast suits your season

Thailand has 2 coastlines with opposite weather, which is the single most useful thing to know before you choose a venue. The Andaman coast, with Phuket and Khao Lak, is at its best from November to April. The Gulf coast, with Koh Samui, stays drier through the middle of the year.

Weddings, vow renewals, anniversaries, milestone birthdays and honeymoons, planned by one Wedded Advisor.

See why couples marry in Thailand

  • Two coasts, one country

The Andaman coast (Phuket, Khao Lak, Koh Yao) and the Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Hua Hin) dry out at different times of year. That gives couples a good beach option in most months.

  • Short hop from Australia

Perth to Phuket is about 6.5 hours direct, and Sydney and Melbourne have direct flights to both Phuket and Bangkok. Guests can fly out on a Thursday night and be poolside by Friday.

  • Legal marriage is achievable

Thailand registers marriages for visitors at its district offices, and the Australian Consulate-General in Phuket issues the paperwork Australians need. Same-sex couples have been able to register since 23 January 2025.

  • Mountains as well as beaches

Chiang Mai offers temples, cool-season evenings and hill views from mid-October to mid-February. It suits couples who want greenery and culture over sand.

  • Hospitality at every level

From large beach resorts on Phuket to private-island hideaways off Samui and Koh Yao, there is a venue style for 20 guests or 300. Thai service culture makes hosting a big group feel easy.

  • A holiday for your guests

Island boat trips, night markets, cooking classes and spa days mean guests build a week around your wedding. Many will stay on long after the reception.

Choose your coast, then your beach

Thailand's largest island and the easiest to reach, with direct flights from Australia. Beach resorts on the west coast, quieter capes in the south and east, and venues for large guest lists.

    See 7 venues in Phuket
  • Koh Samui

A Gulf island with smaller resorts, private bays and a slower pace. A short flight from Bangkok, and the choice when your date falls in the middle of the year.

See 7 venues in Koh Samui
  • Khao Lak

North of Phuket on the mainland, with long, quiet beaches and resorts that feel removed from the crowds.

See 1 venue in Khao Lak
  • Koh Yao

Islands in Phang Nga Bay between Phuket and Krabi, reached by boat. Limestone views and a sense of having the place to yourselves.

  • Hua Hin and Cha-am

Beach towns a few hours' drive from Bangkok, long favoured by Thai families. Practical for guests flying into the capital.

  • Chiang Mai

The mountain north: temples, gardens and cool evenings from November to February. A Thailand wedding without a beach.

Good to know

Arrival airports
Phuket International Airport (HKT), for Phuket, Khao Lak by road and Koh Yao by boat, Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok (BKK), the main international gateway and the usual connection point for Koh Samui, Chiang Mai and Hua Hin, Samui International Airport (USM), built by Bangkok Airways, about 2 km north of Chaweng, Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX)
Currency
Thai baht (THB)
Tipping
Tipping is not compulsory in Thailand. Many hotels and restaurants add a service charge, and leaving a small amount for good service from drivers, guides and spa staff is common.
Language
Thai. English is widely used in hotels and resort areas.
Power
230 V, 50 Hz. The Thai national standard socket is Type O; pack a universal adaptor.
Time zone
Indochina Time, UTC+7, with no daylight saving. That is 3 hours behind Sydney in the Australian winter and 4 hours behind during Australian daylight saving.
Health and safety
The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the 4 southern provinces bordering Malaysia, which are far from the wedding regions, and warns about rip currents in the May to October monsoon and drink spiking in tourist areas. Check Smartraveller (Australia), travel.state.gov (US) or the FCDO (UK) before booking and again before you fly.

Bring your guests with you

Most Thailand weddings run over 3 to 4 days, with a welcome dinner, the ceremony and a recovery day by the pool. Depending on where they start, guests connect through Bangkok or fly direct to Phuket.

Your guest list is your leverage. Every room your guests book counts as one reservation, made by one house, on relationships 17 years old.

Marrying legally

Yes: visitors can legally marry by registering at a Thai district office (Amphoe), and an unregistered ceremony has no legal effect under Thai law.

  1. Each foreign partner gets a freedom-to-marry document from their own embassy in Thailand: Australians need a Certificate of No Impediment from the Australian Embassy in Bangkok or Consulate-General in Phuket, and British nationals need a marital status affirmation from the British Embassy in Bangkok.
  2. Attend the embassy or consulate appointment in person with original passports and any divorce, death or name change certificates.
  3. Have the embassy documents translated into Thai by a translation agency.
  4. Have the translated documents legalised by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs at a legalisation office, such as Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai.
  5. Take the legalised documents and passports to a district office (Amphoe) and register the marriage, ideally with an interpreter.
  6. Receive your Thai marriage certificate, then hold your ceremony and celebration at your chosen venue.

Documents you will usually need

  • Valid passports for both partners
  • Freedom-to-marry document from your embassy in Thailand (for Australian passport holders, a Certificate of No Impediment issued in Thailand; an Australian Single Status Certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages is not accepted)
  • Certified copy of passport issued by your embassy
  • Original divorce certificate or former spouse's death certificate, if previously married
  • Change of name certificate, if your name has changed
  • Certified English translations of any foreign-language documents
  • Thai translations of embassy documents, legalised by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Timing
There is no residency period, but the paperwork takes several working days in Thailand. For Australian passport holders, the Phuket consulate releases the Certificate of No Impediment the next working day and Thai authorities accept it for 3 months. For UK passport holders, apply no more than 3 months ahead and book the embassy appointment at least 7 days after applying. Allow at least 1 week in Thailand before the wedding.
Recognition at home
Australia generally recognises a marriage that was legal in Thailand and would have been valid under Australian law, with no need to register it at home. The UK recognises it if Thai law was followed and the marriage is allowed under UK law; US couples should confirm recognition with their home state.
The symbolic route
Many couples marry legally at home first, for example at a registry office in Australia, then hold a symbolic ceremony in Thailand. This avoids the embassy, translation and district office steps while keeping the full celebration.

Requirements change. Your Wedded Advisor confirms the current process for your passports before anything is booked.

Costs

Your Wedded Advisor quotes each venue for your date and guest count, and confirms in writing what is included before you commit.

What adds to the starting figure

  • More guests than the offer includes, usually priced per person
  • Rooms for you and your guests
  • Flights and transfers
  • Photography, film, styling, flowers and entertainment
  • Welcome dinners, recovery days and other events
  • Peak season and weekend dates

Planning timeline

  1. 18 to 12 months to go
    • Choose your region by month: Andaman coast for December to April, Samui for May to September
    • Set a guest count and shortlist venues
    • Decide between a legal Thai marriage and a symbolic ceremony
  2. 12 to 9 months to go
    • Book your venue and a local planner or coordinator
    • Send save-the-dates with the region and airport
    • Hold guest accommodation near the venue
  3. 9 to 6 months to go
    • Book photographer, celebrant and florist
    • Share flight options from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane with guests
    • Check every passport is valid for at least 6 months past arrival
  4. 6 to 3 months to go
    • Send formal invitations and collect RSVPs
    • Plan welcome drinks, a guest day trip and a recovery day
    • Locate original divorce or name change certificates if needed
  5. 3 to 1 months to go
    • Book your embassy or consulate appointment for the freedom-to-marry document
    • Line up a translation agency and district office date
    • Confirm menus, run sheet and transfers
  6. Final 2 weeks
    • Remind guests to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 3 days of arrival
    • Confirm wet-weather backup with the venue
    • Pack originals of all marriage documents in hand luggage
  7. Wedding week
    • Arrive at least 1 week early if marrying legally
    • Attend the embassy appointment, translation, legalisation and district office
    • Do a venue walk-through and final timings check

Your weekend

  • Day 1: Arrival and welcome

Guests land in Phuket, Samui or Chiang Mai and settle in. Host relaxed sunset drinks so everyone meets before the big day.

  • Day 2: Island or culture day

Run an optional group outing, such as a Phang Nga Bay boat trip, an Ang Thong park day from Samui or a Doi Suthep temple visit in Chiang Mai. The couple can rest, do a final check or join in.

  • Day 3: Wedding day

Hold the ceremony in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and catch the softer light. Follow with dinner, speeches and dancing under the stars or in a covered pavilion.

  • Day 4: Recovery and farewell

Host a long brunch by the pool or beach. Guests head off to the airport or start their own extended holiday.

Things for your guests to do

  • Phang Nga Bay by boat. Limestone islands rise from a protected bay between Phuket and the mainland; a classic day trip.
  • Phuket Old Town. Colourful Sino-Portuguese shophouses now home to cafes, shops and small museums.
  • Similan Islands. A marine national park off Khao Lak, known for snorkelling and diving in the dry season.
  • Ang Thong Marine Park. A 42-island marine park reached by boat from Koh Samui, good for kayaking and lookouts.
  • Doi Suthep temple. A sacred hilltop temple 15 km from Chiang Mai with views over the city.
  • Hua Hin beach and station. A long town beach and a historic railway station 850 m from the sand.
  • Koh Yao island time. Quiet island district in Phang Nga Bay for cycling, beaches and slow village life.
  • Thai cooking class. Market visit then hands-on lesson; most resort areas offer half-day classes for groups.

Celebrate more than a wedding in Thailand

Thailand suits a honeymoon that changes coast or country: a Gulf island after a Phuket wedding, or a few nights in Bangkok before flying home. A Wedded Advisor plans those trips with the same hotel programs as the wedding.

  • Vow renewalsThe same promise, years on, with no paperwork.
  • AnniversariesCome back to the place, or choose somewhere new.
  • HoneymoonsThe trip after the wedding, planned with the same care.
  • Milestone birthdaysA 40th, 50th or 60th worth flying for.
  • ProposalsThe question, the view and the moment.
  • Engagement partiesYour first celebration together, with the people who matter.

Get answers before you enquire

How much does a wedding in Thailand cost?+
The venues on this page start from the figures shown, for the ceremony and reception at that property. Your total depends on guest count, season, dining and nights booked. Your Wedded Advisor costs it on your dates before you commit.
When is the best time to get married in Thailand?+
November to April on the Andaman coast, including Phuket and Khao Lak. January to August on the Gulf coast, including Koh Samui. Chiang Mai is at its best from November to February.
Is Phuket or Koh Samui better for a wedding?+
Phuket is easier to reach and has more venues for large guest lists. Koh Samui is smaller and quieter, and its drier season falls in the middle of the year.
Can we marry legally in Thailand?+
Yes, through registration at a district office once your documents are certified and translated. Many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Thailand instead.
How many guests can a Thailand venue host?+
From intimate venues for 40 to resorts for more than 400. Use the guest filter above to see what suits your list.
Can we legally marry in Thailand as Australians?+
Yes. Australian passport holders get a Certificate of No Impediment from the Australian Embassy in Bangkok or Consulate-General in Phuket, have it translated and legalised, then register at a district office. Australia generally recognises the marriage without any extra registration at home.
How long do we need to be in Thailand before a legal wedding?+
There is no residency requirement, but the embassy, translation, legalisation and district office steps take several working days. Plan to arrive at least 1 week before the wedding.
Can same-sex couples marry in Thailand?+
Yes. Thailand's marriage equality law took effect in January 2025 and district offices accept registrations from 23 January 2025. Check your home country's recognition rules as well.
When is the best time to marry in Phuket?+
December to April is the most reliable dry period on the Andaman coast, including Phuket, Khao Lak and Koh Yao. The southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher seas from about May to October.
When is the best time to marry on Koh Samui?+
Samui is on the Gulf coast and stays drier during the Andaman monsoon, so January to September works well. The heaviest rain usually falls in November and December.
