Bangkok
Day 1 · Bangkok
You are met at the airport and taken to your hotel. The rest of the day is free: a Thai massage, a first taste of the street food, or sunset from one of the city's rooftop bars.
Day 2 · Bangkok
A full free day in the capital. The Grand Palace, a royal residence from the 18th to the mid-20th century, holds Wat Phra Kaew and the Emerald Buddha, and excursions can be booked locally.
Ayutthaya and Phitsanulok
Day 3 · Ayutthaya and Phitsanulok
Drive to Ayutthaya, the old island capital largely destroyed some 250 years ago, to see Wat Yai Chaimongkhon, Wat Phanan Choeng and Wat Mahathat, where tree roots have grown around a stone Buddha head. A long-tail boat circles the island before lunch, then you continue to Phitsanulok.

Lampang and Chiang Mai
Day 4 · Lampang and Chiang Mai
Climb the naga staircase to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, a walled Lanna temple on a hill with a golden chedi and a bronze Buddha. After lunch, carry on to Chiang Mai with the rest of the day free, perhaps for the night bazaar.

Chiang Mai
Day 5 · Chiang Mai
Ride the cable car, or climb 309 steps, to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep on its mountain above the city. Then browse San Kamphaeng Road, where workshops make celadon pottery, silver, lacquerware, paper and silk. Lunch, then a free afternoon.
Lamphun and Sukhothai
Day 6 · Lamphun and Sukhothai
Stop in Lamphun at the thousand-year-old Wat Phra That Hariphunchai and its tall golden chedi. Continue south to Sukhothai, the first capital of Siam, where the UNESCO-listed historical park holds the ruins of almost 200 buildings.

Lopburi and Bangkok
Day 7 · Lopburi and Bangkok
Head south to Lopburi, where macaques roam the streets, to see the Khmer ruins of Phra Prang Sam Yot and the shrine of San Phra Kan. Lunch on the road, then on to Bangkok for a final night.

Bangkok → Phuket
Begin with three nights in Bangkok and two guided days: the Grand Palace and great temples, then the railway and floating markets beyond the city. Fly south to Phuket for three nights near Patong with your days left open for the beach or a boat out to the islands.
Two easy days in Bangkok, then a private road loop north through the old capitals of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai to Chiang Mai and back. Your guide and driver travel with only the two of you, and Chiang Mai has a free afternoon or two to wander.
