  1. Chiang Rai

    Day 1 · Chiang Rai

    Arrive in Chiang Rai

You are met at Chiang Rai airport and taken to your central hotel. The rest of the day is free: the old town dates back to King Mangrai in the 13th century, and the night bazaar is a good first taste of the city.

  2. Day 2 · Chiang Rai

Hill tribes and the Golden Triangle

Pass the King Mangrai monument on the way to the Hilltribe Museum, then visit Yao and Akha villages in the Mae Chan district and the border market town of Mae Sai. After lunch at the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, climb the 350 steps to Wat Phra That Chom Kitti at Chiang Saen before returning to Chiang Rai.

  3. Chiang Mai

    Day 3 · Chiang Mai

The white temple, then Chiang Mai

Stop at Wat Rong Khun, the all-white temple set with mirror glass, on the way south. In Chiang Mai ride the cable car up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep for views over the city, cruise the River Ping, and have khao soi with a dance performance at a farm before a walk through the flower market.

    Elephants and the old city

Spend the morning at an elephant sanctuary that focuses on care and observation rather than riding. After lunch, explore the walled old city: the tall chedi of Wat Suan Dok, the large complex of Wat Phra Sing and the 14th-century Wat Chedi Luang.

Join local people offering food to monks on their morning alms round. Drive south via Uthai Thani with lunch in Chai Nat, then walk the Ayutthaya Historical Park: Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the golden Buddha of Viharn Phra Mongkol Bophit, and the Buddha head held in tree roots at Wat Phra Mahathat.
