Thailand travel packages

Island-hop the Andaman by private longtail, then trade beaches for Bangkok's river and Chiang Mai's temples. Tell us your dates and we plan every villa, guide and transfer around them.

Reserve for A$200

It comes off your final price, and is refunded in full if you don't go ahead.

Spend slow, warm days on Thailand's islands

Thailand slows you down. Your pool villa looks over the Andaman Sea, a longtail boat waits at the jetty, and there is nowhere to be until dinner. Phuket and Krabi face the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay, at their calmest and clearest in the dry season, November through April, while Koh Samui on the Gulf side has its best weather in the middle of the year. Bangkok is the gateway, with direct flights from Europe, the Gulf, across Asia and from Australia, and we time the short hops south and north so you never lose a day.

Bangkok earns more than a stopover. Stay on the Chao Phraya, take a private boat through the old canals and let a guide lead you to the stalls locals queue at. Then fly north to Chiang Mai, where the air cools and a morning cooking in a farmhouse kitchen is time well spent. Further up in Chiang Rai, a tented camp above the Ruak River looks across the water to Laos and Myanmar.

Taste, ride and wander through Thailand

Private days that take you past the postcard views and into everyday Thai life.

  • Eat your way around Chiang Mai

Spend a day with a local food expert who knows northern Thai cooking inside out, tasting at market stalls and in the family kitchens locals queue for.

  • Bangkok's canals by longtail boat

Leave the towers behind on a private longtail through the old canals, where locals fish from the banks. Step ashore in Kudi Jeen, a 200-year-old Thai-Portuguese quarter with a quiet temple and a famous bakery.

  • The story of the Lanna kingdom

Walk through a medieval gate into Chiang Mai's old city with a guide who tells the stories of the Lanna kingdom. Finish with khao soi, the north's coconut curry noodles, at a much-loved local table.

  • Cycle Bangkok's green lung

Ride the raised paths of Bang Krachao, a loop of mangrove, orchards and temples across the river from the city, including an Ayutthaya-era temple under a 250-year-old teak roof.

  • Old Bangkok and the river

Explore Talad Noi with a local guide, where Chinese merchant mansions sit beside street art, studios and small cafes. Then take to the Chao Phraya by boat for a different view of the old city.

  • Bangkok's markets at first light

Start with a street-food breakfast at a morning market, then move through Yaowarat, the silk and spice stalls of Little India and the flower market, where marigold garlands are threaded by hand.

  • Phang Nga Bay by speedboat

Speed out among the limestone towers of Phang Nga Bay, switch to a canoe to slip into the sea caves of Panak Island, and lunch on the beach at Rang Yai after a stop at a fishing village on stilts.

  • A Thai massage on Koh Samui

Give a full day to rest on Koh Samui, with a deep, traditional Thai massage from skilled therapists that leaves you lighter for the journey home.

Weigh the islands against the north

Most first visits pair Bangkok with one coast, and the north rewards a second trip.

  • Bangkok

Temples by the Chao Phraya, long-tail boats through the canals and some of Asia's best street food, a city to start and end in.

  • Chiang Mai and the north

Cooler hills, more than 300 temples and the old walled city, with mountain villages and night markets close by.

  • Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle

The White Temple, tea hills and the point where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet on the Mekong.

  • Ayutthaya and Sukhothai

Two former royal capitals, their ruined temples and Buddha images now set in quiet historical parks.

  • Phuket, Krabi and Khao Lak

The Andaman coast: limestone islands, long beaches and the calmest seas from November to April.

  • Koh Samui and the Gulf

Palm-lined bays on the Gulf of Thailand, at their best in the middle of the year when the Andaman is wet.

Travel Thailand privately or with a small group

Most guests see Thailand on a private tour or with a small group, and some add a Bangkok city break or a cruise along the coast.

  • Private tours

Your own guide in Bangkok and the north, with boats and flights to the islands timed around you.

  • Small group tours

A few travellers, one guide and the classic loop of Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the coast.

  • Cruises

Sea voyages along the Thai coast, with your cabin chosen and a Bangkok stay added.

Time your trip to the calmer coast

The Andaman and the Gulf have their best weather in different months, so the calendar picks your beach.

  • JanuaryBest

Cool and dry across the country, the Andaman islands at their calmest.

  • FebruaryBest

Dry and warm, with clear water on the Andaman coast.

  • MarchGood

Hot season begins in Bangkok and the north, beaches still dry.

  • AprilMixed

The hottest month, with Songkran water festivities in mid April.

  • MayMixed

Rains begin on the Andaman coast, the Gulf islands stay drier.

  • JuneGood

Koh Samui and the Gulf enjoy their best months while the west is wet.

  • JulyGood

Green season inland, with the Gulf islands still dry and calm.

  • AugustGood

Gulf beaches at their best, short afternoon showers elsewhere.

  • SeptemberMixed

The wettest month on the Andaman coast and in Bangkok.

  • OctoberMixed

Rains ease in the north, the Gulf islands turn wetter.

  • NovemberBest

Cool season returns, with Loy Krathong lanterns in Chiang Mai.

  • DecemberBest

Dry, sunny and busy, book early for festive dates.

Fly direct to Bangkok

Bangkok has direct flights from Europe, the Gulf, across Asia and from Australia, and Phuket and Chiang Mai are a short hop beyond.

  • Sydney (non-stop): 9.5 h
  • Melbourne (non-stop): 9.5 h
  • Brisbane (non-stop): 9 h
  • Perth (non-stop): 5.5 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): 20 h
  • London (non-stop): 12 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): 6 h

Add Angkor after Bangkok

Siem Reap is about an hour's flight away, which makes the temples of Angkor the easiest addition.

  • Cambodia

The temples of Angkor at sunrise and the riverside capital.

  • Vietnam

Ha Long Bay, Hoi An's lanterns and the food of Hanoi.

  • Malaysia

Langkawi's islands, rainforest and the street food of Penang.

Settle your Thailand questions before booking

How long can we stay in Thailand without a visa?+
It depends on your passport. Australian, UK and US passport holders, for example, can currently enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days, and every visitor completes the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before landing. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Which months suit the Gulf islands rather than the Andaman coast?+
Koh Samui and the Gulf islands are at their driest in the middle of the year, when the Andaman side sees more rain. Bangkok and Chiang Mai are most comfortable around December and January, so your travel expert matches the beach to your dates.
How many nights do Bangkok, the north and an island need?+
Plan on around 12 nights, with three in Bangkok, three or four in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai and five or six on the coast. With a week, choose Bangkok and one island and save the north for a return trip.
Can we island hop between the Andaman and Gulf coasts?+
Yes, though the two coasts sit on opposite sides of the peninsula, so you fly between them rather than taking a boat. Short direct flights link Phuket and Koh Samui, and your travel expert times them so you lose no more than a morning.
Which Thai island suits a honeymoon best?+
Koh Yao Noi suits couples who want quiet, while Phuket offers more restaurants and Koh Samui has hillside pool villas above secluded coves. Tell us it is a honeymoon, and your travel expert adds a private longtail to an empty beach and a dinner on the sand.
What should we wear to visit Bangkok's Grand Palace?+
Cover your shoulders and knees, and wear shoes you can slip off at temple doors. Shorts, sleeveless tops and see-through fabrics are turned away at the gate, so pack light trousers or a long skirt.
Is it worth adding Chiang Rai to a Chiang Mai stay?+
Yes, if you have three nights to spare. Chiang Rai is about three hours' drive north, with the White Temple on the way and tented camps at the Golden Triangle beyond.
