Saigon and the Mekong Delta by bicycle

11 days · 10 nights

Ho Chi Minh City → My Tho → Can Tho → Soc Trang → Chau Doc → Ho Chi Minh City

You spend three days in Ho Chi Minh City with its markets, museums and the Cu Chi Tunnels. Then you cycle out from My Tho to Can Tho for the floating market and Soc Trang's Khmer temples, ride on to the stork colonies and flooded forest near Chau Doc, and meet the Cham community before returning to the city.

Taste Vietnam before you see it

Your first morning in Hanoi might begin on a low stool with a bowl of pho, the Old Quarter waking around you in a rush of scooters and street sellers. Then a night aboard a junk on Ha Long Bay changes the pace entirely, the limestone karsts rising from green water as dinner is served on deck. Vietnam surprises travellers with how much there is, and how easily it fits together.

In the centre, Hue keeps the citadel of the Nguyen emperors, and Hoi An's old town glows with silk lanterns at night, a short drive from the beaches of Da Nang. Ho Chi Minh City is louder and faster, with French colonial buildings and some of the country's best restaurants. A boat through the Mekong Delta shows floating markets and fruit orchards, an easy day or two beyond the city.

Ride, taste and explore Vietnam

See each city the local way, by cyclo or Vespa, and by boat on the water.

  • Hanoi by bike at dawn

Cycle through Hanoi as it wakes, past market sellers setting up, people practising tai chi by the lake and street breakfasts on every corner.

  • Walk the valley of Mai Chau

Spend three hours walking among cornfields, bamboo forest and rice paddies in the valley of Mai Chau, stopping in stilt-house villages.

  • Cycle the Perfume River

Ride along the Perfume River at an easy pace, stopping at pagodas, royal tombs and village gardens of the old imperial capital.

  • Dinner with a family in Hue

Ride pillion on a vintage Vespa through Hue, pause for Champagne above the river, then sit down to dinner in a local family's home.

  • Farming and fishing in Hoi An

Try your hand at rice farming and net fishing with families outside Hoi An, who have refined these skills over generations.

  • Saigon by cyclo and Vespa

Explore Ho Chi Minh City by cyclo by day and Vespa by night, from French colonial landmarks to the street-food lanes locals love.

  • Ho Chi Minh City's art scene

See private collections and a leading gallery of emerging artists on a guided tour of the city's contemporary art.

  • Cai Rang floating market

Go out early by boat to Cai Rang, the Mekong Delta's largest floating market, where traders sell fruit and noodle soup from their boats.

Choose your stops along the coast

Hanoi and Ha Long Bay suit the start, and the Mekong makes a calm finish.

  • Hanoi and Ha Long Bay

Hanoi's Old Quarter, lakes and street food, then a cruise among the limestone islands and quiet coves of Ha Long Bay.

  • Ho Chi Minh City

The former Saigon, with French colonial buildings, busy markets and the Cu Chi tunnels within an easy day trip.

  • The Mekong Delta

River towns such as Can Tho and Chau Doc, with floating markets, fruit orchards and narrow canals explored by boat.

Read Vietnam's regional climates

Each region has its own best months, so we order the route to match the weather.

  • JanuaryGood

Dry and warm in the south, cool and often grey in Hanoi.

  • FebruaryGood

Dry in the south and the Mekong, with Tet in late January or February.

  • MarchBest

Warm and dry in the south, milder and clearer in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay.

  • AprilBest

Pleasant across the country, a fine month for Ha Long Bay and the Mekong.

  • MayGood

Hot in the south as the rains begin, still fine in the north before summer.

  • JuneMixed

Hot and humid in Hanoi, with wet season afternoons in Ho Chi Minh City.

  • JulyMixed

Summer rain in both north and south, and typhoons can affect Ha Long Bay.

  • AugustMixed

Hot and wet in the north, with cruise changes possible in Ha Long Bay.

Fly direct to Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnam has non-stop flights from Europe, the Gulf, across Asia and from Australia, and Hanoi is a short domestic hop.

  • Sydney (non-stop): about 9 h
  • Melbourne (non-stop): about 9 h
  • Brisbane (non-stop): about 9 h
  • Perth (non-stop): about 6 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 19 h
  • London (non-stop): about 13 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 7 h

Cross into Cambodia for Angkor

Siem Reap is a short flight from Ho Chi Minh City, which makes Angkor a natural addition.

  • Cambodia

The temples of Angkor at sunrise and the riverside capital.

  • Thailand

Bangkok's temples, the cool north and islands on two seas.

Plan the practical side of Vietnam

Can I get a Vietnam visa on arrival?+
No. Most visitors, Australians included, apply online for an eVisa, which allows up to 90 days with single or multiple entry, and should print the approval to show at check-in. Some passports are exempt for short stays. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Is there one month that suits all of Vietnam?+
Not quite, as the north, centre and south have different weather. March and April come closest, while Hoi An and Hue see their heaviest rain late in the year.
How long do we need to see Vietnam end to end?+
Two weeks covers Hanoi, a night on Ha Long Bay, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta, using domestic flights between regions. Ten days suits two regions rather than three.
Should we stay overnight on Ha Long Bay?+
Yes. A night on board lets you see the limestone islands at sunset and dawn, after the day boats leave. Lan Ha Bay nearby is quieter, and your travel expert picks the cabin and route.
Where in Vietnam suits an anniversary?+
Hoi An's riverside on a lantern night or a private junk on Ha Long Bay suits an anniversary, and Phu Quoc's beach villas make a slow finish. Tell us the date and your travel expert plans the evening.
Can we have clothes tailored in Hoi An?+
Yes. Hoi An's tailors can make a suit or dress within a day or two, so book them early in your stay to allow at least one fitting.
Can we cruise the Mekong into Cambodia?+
Yes. Mekong river voyages link the delta with Phnom Penh, usually over a week, and can continue to Siem Reap by road.
