Reach Angkor before the day begins

The temples are the reason most travellers come, and the way you see them matters. A private guide and driver collect you in the dark, so you are inside Ta Prohm or on the causeway at Angkor Wat while the light is soft and the paths are empty. By late morning you are back at your hotel in Siem Reap for a swim and a long lunch, ready for a sunset boat on the Tonle Sap.

Cambodia also rewards a few days beyond the temples. In the Cardamom Mountains, a jungle camp is reached by zipline over the river, with guides who walk you into the forest. On the southern coast, villas on the Koh Rong islands look over clear water, an easy finish before the short flight home through Bangkok or Singapore.

See Cambodia at its own pace

Each day is timed around the soft early light and the quiet hours at the temples.

  • Sunrise at Angkor Wat

Walk the carved corridors and inner courtyards of Angkor Wat as the sun comes up, then sit down to breakfast beside the old royal pool of Srah Srang.

  • Angkor Thom's moat at sunset

Glide around the moat of Angkor's ancient walled city in a traditional wooden boat as the sky turns from pink to violet, with drinks and canapés on board.

  • The new culture of Phnom Penh

Give the capital more than a stopover, with a guide who shows you its galleries, design shops and riverside cafes alongside the history that shaped them.

  • Khmer dinner by remork

Ride a private remork, a carriage pulled by a motorbike, between Siem Reap's best tables, cocktail bars and home-style supper spots.

  • Village life beyond Siem Reap

Drive past rice paddies into the countryside to meet a local family and see how a clean water project has changed daily life in the village.

Map out your days around Angkor

Give Angkor Wat and the jungle temples a morning each, then save an evening for the lake.

  • Angkor Wat

The largest temple of the Angkor complex, best seen at sunrise from across its moat, then explored gallery by gallery with your guide.

  • Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm

The Bayon's carved stone faces inside the walled city of Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm, where tree roots wrap the ruins.

  • Siem Reap and Tonle Sap

A relaxed riverside town of markets and restaurants, with stilt villages on the Tonle Sap lake a short drive away.

Plan around Cambodia's dry months

The cooler, drier season brings the easiest temple days, and the green season brings fuller moats and fewer people.

  • JanuaryBest

Dry, sunny and comfortable, ideal for long days at Angkor.

  • FebruaryBest

Dry and warming, with clear sunrises over Angkor Wat.

  • MarchGood

Hot and dry, so plan temple visits for the early morning.

  • AprilMixed

The hottest month, with Khmer New Year celebrations mid April.

  • MayMixed

Very hot, with the first monsoon storms late in the day.

  • JuneMixed

Green season begins, with short heavy showers and fewer visitors at the temples.

  • JulyMixed

Monsoon rain most afternoons, with the moats and lake full and green.

  • AugustMixed

Wet and humid, with quiet temples in the mornings.

  • SeptemberAvoid

The wettest month, with flooding possible around the Tonle Sap.

  • OctoberMixed

Rains begin to ease, and the countryside is at its greenest.

  • NovemberBest

Dry season returns, and the temples are framed by green rice fields.

  • DecemberBest

Cool, dry and the most popular month at Angkor, so book early.

Connect to Siem Reap through Bangkok

Most long-haul travellers connect through Bangkok or Singapore. Your travel expert finds the best connection from your home airport.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 13 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 13 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 13 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 9 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 21 h
  • London (one stop): about 16 h
  • Dubai (one stop): about 10 h

Join Cambodia to Vietnam or Thailand

Both sit a short flight away, so a temple stay fits neatly before a beach or a city.

  • Thailand

Bangkok's temples, the cool north and islands on two seas.

  • Vietnam

Ha Long Bay, Hoi An's lanterns and the food of Hanoi.

Answer the Angkor questions first

Can we get a Cambodian visa on arrival or online?+
Yes, for most passports. Australian passport holders, for example, can choose an e-visa applied for online or a tourist visa on arrival, both valid for 30 days. If you fly in, you also submit the e-Arrival Card within seven days before landing. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
When is Angkor at its most comfortable?+
The dry, cooler months around December and January are the easiest for temple days, though they are also the busiest. The green season, roughly May to October, brings afternoon rain, full moats and far fewer people.
How many days does Angkor deserve?+
Three full days lets you see Angkor Wat, the Bayon and Ta Prohm at their quietest hours, then reach Banteay Srei and Beng Mealea further out. Add two nights in Phnom Penh for the riverfront and the Royal Palace.
Which Angkor temple pass should we buy?+
Passes are sold for one, three or seven days, and the three-day pass suits most visits. Your guide takes you to the official ticket centre, where your photo is printed on the pass.
Is a sunrise at Angkor Wat worth the early start?+
Yes, especially from the north pond, where the towers reflect in the water. Afterwards your guide takes you straight to Ta Prohm or the Bayon while most visitors are still at breakfast.
How do we celebrate an anniversary in Siem Reap?+
Your travel expert can arrange a blessing with monks at a pagoda and a private dinner in the evening, or a sunset at a quiet temple away from the crowds. Tell us the date and we plan the day around it.
Can we travel between Cambodia and Vietnam by river?+
Yes. River voyages on the Mekong link Phnom Penh with the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, usually over a week, with cabins confirmed before you fly.
