Hear lions call across the Mara at dawn

Most travellers land in Nairobi tired and leave Kenya changed. A light aircraft sets you down on a dirt strip in the Mara, your guide hands you a cold towel, and within the hour you are watching a cheetah scan the grass. In the long dry months the great migration arrives, around two million wildebeest and zebra, with crocodiles waiting at the river crossings.

Private conservancies on the edge of the reserve limit the number of vehicles, so you share a sighting with few others, and night drives and guided walks are allowed. Further north, Lewa and Ol Pejeta protect rhino on former cattle ranches below Mount Kenya, and Amboseli's elephants walk with Kilimanjaro behind them. Many travellers end on the Indian Ocean at Diani or Lamu, where wooden dhows still sail between the islands.

Try these days out in Kenya

Add one or two to your safari and your travel expert fits them around the game drives.

  • Balloon over the Mara at sunrise

Lift off before dawn and drift over the plains as the light comes up, watching herds and hunters below. You land to a champagne breakfast laid out in the grass.

  • Fly over the Mara by helicopter

See the reserve from the air, following rivers and herds from above. Longer flights reach the shores of Lake Victoria or the soda flats of Lake Magadi.

  • Feed giraffes in Nairobi

Stand level with endangered Rothschild's giraffes on the raised platform at the Giraffe Centre and feed them by hand. Keepers explain how the breeding programme returns them to the wild.

  • Ride out on a horseback safari

Cross open savanna on horseback in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, passing zebra and giraffe at their own pace. Rides suit confident riders and first timers alike.

  • Meet Lewa's anti-poaching team

Watch the tracker dogs and their handlers train, and hear how the rangers protect Lewa's rhino day and night.

Choose between the Mara and the north

Most Kenya safaris pair two regions, and each one changes what you see on a drive.

  • Nairobi

The gateway city, with a national park on its edge, the giraffe centre and the elephant orphanage, a calm first night before the bush.

  • Maasai Mara

Open grassland where the great migration crosses the Mara River, with lions, cheetahs and leopards seen on almost every game drive.

  • Amboseli

Large elephant herds walk the swamps with Kilimanjaro rising behind them, the classic view of Kenya on a clear morning.

  • Elementaita and the Rift Valley

Soda lakes on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, with flamingos, pelicans and quiet walks between the bigger parks.

  • Ol Pejeta and Laikipia

A private conservancy below Mount Kenya, home to black and white rhino, a chimpanzee sanctuary and wide views of the plains.

Choose a private safari or a small group

Most guests take Kenya as a private safari with their own guide, while small group departures and private jet journeys also include it.

  • Private tours

Your own driver guide and vehicle in the Mara, so you stay at a sighting as long as you like.

  • Small group tours

Share a vehicle with a few others and a guide who follows the herds week by week.

  • Safaris

Game drives in the Mara and Laikipia, with night drives and walks in the conservancies.

Time your safari to the migration

The herds reach the Mara in the long dry months, and the green season brings quieter parks and newborn animals.

  • NovemberMixed

Short rains bring afternoon showers, landscapes turn green again.

  • DecemberGood

Short rains clear, a festive season for safari and Nairobi alike.

Fly to Nairobi through Africa or the Gulf

  • Melbourne (one stop): about 21 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 22 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 15 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 22 h
  • London (non-stop): about 8.5 h

  • Tanzania

The Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire's elephants.

  • Uganda

Mountain gorillas in Bwindi and chimpanzees in Kibale.

Get answers before your Kenya safari

Do I need an eTA for Kenya?+
Yes, with most passports. Australian passport holders, for example, apply online for Kenya's Electronic Travel Authorisation and pay the fee before departure. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
When does the migration reach the Masai Mara?+
The herds usually arrive in the Mara around July and stay until about October, with river crossings busiest in August and September. Timing shifts with the rains, so your travel expert places your camp near the herds.
Is a private conservancy better than the main reserve?+
The conservancies bordering the Mara cap vehicle numbers and allow night drives, guided walks and off road driving to sightings. Many travellers split their nights between a conservancy and the reserve.
How long should a Kenya safari be?+
Seven to ten days gives you the Mara plus one other region, such as Laikipia or Amboseli. Add three or four nights at Diani or Lamu to finish slowly.
How much luggage can I take on safari flights?+
Light aircraft in Kenya usually limit you to 15 kilograms per person, hand luggage included, in a soft bag without wheels. Your travel expert confirms the limit for each flight.
Can we celebrate with a balloon flight over the Mara?+
Yes. Balloons lift off at dawn and fly for about an hour over the plains, followed by a champagne breakfast in the grass. It is one of the most requested honeymoon and anniversary moments, so we book it with your camp.
What vaccinations should I ask about for Kenya?+
See your doctor or a travel clinic six to eight weeks before you go about yellow fever, malaria tablets and routine vaccines. Your government's travel advice lists the current health advice for Kenya.
Which coast should we add after the Mara?+
Diani's long beach suits a resort stay, and Lamu's old town and dhow sails suit travellers who want somewhere quieter. Both are a short flight from Nairobi.
