Nairobi
Day 1 · Nairobi
You are met at the airport and taken to your hotel, set in gardens of jacaranda and bougainvillaea beside Central Park. Check-in is from 2 pm, so the afternoon is yours to rest or walk into the city centre.
Maasai Mara
Day 2 · Maasai Mara
Leave early and drop down the Rift escarpment on a road built by Italian prisoners in the Second World War, past the small chapel they left at its foot. Cross the valley to Narok and on through wheat fields to reach your lodge in the Mara for lunch, then head out on your first game drive.
Day 3 · Maasai Mara
Morning and afternoon game drives across the plains in search of lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, with lunch and a rest at the lodge in between. The afternoon includes a visit to a Maasai village before you return at sunset.
Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita
Day 4 · Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita
Drive north across the farmland of the Rift Valley, watching for giraffe and gazelle, with a picnic lunch on the way. In the afternoon, a game drive in fenced Lake Nakuru National Park, a refuge for black and white rhino and Rothschild's giraffe, its shores often pink with flamingos. The night is spent by Lake Elementaita.
Amboseli
Day 5 · Amboseli
Leave the Rift Valley after an early breakfast and stop in Nairobi for lunch before continuing south to Amboseli, arriving at your lodge in the late afternoon. From the terrace, watch elephants and antelope come in to graze as the light goes.
Day 6 · Amboseli
A morning and an afternoon on game drives across the dry lake bed, grassland and swamps of Amboseli, with lunch back at the lodge. Look for elephant, giraffe, lion and cheetah, and a wealth of birds, with Kilimanjaro rising behind.
Nairobi
Day 7 · Nairobi
A last look at Kilimanjaro after breakfast, then the drive north across the Athi Plains. You are dropped at the airport or in central Nairobi at about 1.30 pm, so book flights leaving from 4 pm.
