Pour a Cape wine after a leopard sighting

South Africa is one of the easiest safaris to reach, with direct flights into Johannesburg from Europe, the Gulf and Australia. Within a day you can be in an open vehicle on a private reserve in the Sabi Sand, where rangers and trackers follow leopard off road and the Big Five are seen most days. In the red dunes of the Kalahari, meerkats and black-maned lions share the land.

Cape Town is where most trips finish, with Table Mountain above the city and the ocean on both sides of the peninsula. The winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are an hour inland, known for long lunches among the vines, and the Garden Route follows the coast past forests and lagoons. In spring, southern right whales calve close to shore at Hermanus and Walker Bay.

  • Fly over the Cape by helicopter

  • Play Leopard Creek

Play a round on the course that borders Kruger, where hippos, antelope and buffalo often watch from the far bank.

Go underground at the Sterkfontein Caves, where some of the oldest human ancestor fossils were found, then see the displays at Maropeng.

  • Ride the Cape in a sidecar

Ride in the sidecar of a vintage motorcycle along the coast road towards Cape Point, stopping at the best lookouts.

Weigh up the bush against the Cape

Most trips split the nights between a private reserve and Cape Town, with the winelands or coast added if time allows.

  • Cape Town

Table Mountain, Cape Point and the winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, a city with an ocean on two sides.

  • Kruger and the private reserves

Big Five game drives in open vehicles, in Kruger National Park and the private reserves near Hazyview along its western edge.

  • The Garden Route

A coastal drive past Knysna's lagoon, forests and beaches, with ostrich country and caves inland at Oudtshoorn.

  • Johannesburg

The main gateway, with Soweto, the Apartheid Museum and a good first or last night between flights.

  • Gqeberha and the Eastern Cape

Port Elizabeth, now called Gqeberha, marks the end of the Garden Route, with Addo's elephants a short drive inland.

  • Victoria Falls and Chobe

Many of our trips cross the border to the falls and to Botswana's Chobe and Okavango Delta.

Self-drive the Cape or travel guided

In South Africa you can drive the Garden Route yourself, travel privately with your own guide or join a small group, and one private jet journey stops here too.

  • Small group tours

A few travellers and one guide on a route that joins Kruger country with Cape Town.

  • Self-drive holidays

Drive the Garden Route yourself, on the left, with every lodge booked along the coast.

  • Safaris

Open vehicles in the Sabi Sand, with a ranger and tracker who follow leopard off road.

Sort out malaria zones and child ages

What do I need to enter South Africa?+
It depends on your passport. Australian passport holders, for example, can visit for tourism for up to 90 days without a visa. You also complete an online traveller declaration within 24 hours before your last flight into the country. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Is the Sabi Sand malaria free?+
No. The Sabi Sand and Kruger sit in a malaria area, so ask your doctor about tablets. Malaria free reserves such as Madikwe and those in the Eastern Cape suit young children.
Should we do the bush or Cape Town first?+
Many travellers go to the bush first, while early starts suit jet lag, then slow down in Cape Town and the winelands. Flights from Johannesburg make either order easy.
How many nights does South Africa need?+
Ten to twelve nights covers three or four nights on a private reserve, four in Cape Town and two or three in the winelands. Add the Garden Route and you need about two weeks.
Which months suit a South Africa safari and the Cape?+
The dry months from May to September are best for game viewing around Kruger, while Cape Town is warmest and driest from November to March. Whales calve off Hermanus in spring, around September and October.
Is the Garden Route easy to self-drive?+
Yes. The roads are good and signposted, and South Africans drive on the left, as in the UK and Australia. Most self-drives take five to seven days along the coast east of Cape Town.
Where should we mark an anniversary in South Africa?+
Many couples choose a private cellar tasting and long lunch in Franschhoek, then a boma dinner on a private reserve. Your travel expert tells the lodge and the estate about the occasion.
Can we see penguins near Cape Town?+
Yes. African penguins live at Boulders Beach in Simon's Town, about 45 minutes from the city on the way to Cape Point. Boardwalks let you watch them up close.
