Feel the silence of the Namib desert

Namibia is where travellers who know big empty country still find themselves lost for words. The Namib has been dry for around 55 million years, and its dunes run along the Atlantic for some 2,000 kilometres. At Sossusvlei you climb a red slope at first light, then walk down into Deadvlei, where camel thorn trees have stood dead for centuries on a white clay pan.

Further north, desert elephants and lions follow the dry riverbeds of the Hoanib, and community conservancies in Damaraland protect Africa's largest free roaming population of black rhino. Etosha's waterholes draw lion and elephant through the dry months. Many travellers drive the main route themselves on good gravel roads, while others fly between camps and see the Skeleton Coast from the air.

Divide your nights between dunes and waterholes

Most Namibia trips begin at Sossusvlei and finish at Etosha's waterholes.

  • Sossusvlei and the Namib

Some of the world's highest dunes, the white clay pan of Deadvlei and its old camel thorn trees, best at sunrise.

  • Swakopmund and the coast

A seaside town where the desert meets the Atlantic, with dune drives and boat trips to see seals and dolphins.

  • Etosha

A vast salt pan ringed by waterholes, where elephants, rhino and lions come to drink in the dry months.

Choose Namibia's dry or green season

The dry months from May to October bring wildlife to Etosha's waterholes, and storms from December to March turn the desert briefly green.

  • JanuaryMixed

Hot with summer storms inland, Etosha turns green and game spreads out.

  • FebruaryMixed

The wettest month inland, with dramatic skies over the desert.

  • MarchMixed

Rains taper off, grass is high and roads can be slow.

  • AprilGood

Clear air after the rains and green plains across the north.

  • MayGood

Dry, mild days and cool nights, a good month for driving.

  • JuneBest

Cool, dry winter, game begins to gather at Etosha's waterholes.

  • JulyBest

Crisp mornings and clear skies, excellent game viewing in Etosha.

  • AugustBest

Dry and sunny, the best waterhole sightings of the year.

  • SeptemberBest

Warming days and peak game viewing before the heat.

  • OctoberGood

Hot inland, wildlife concentrated at the last waterholes.

  • NovemberGood

Very hot in the desert, first rains possible late in the month.

  • DecemberMixed

Hot with summer storms, the coast stays mild.

Connect to Windhoek through Johannesburg

Most travellers change planes in Johannesburg for the two hour hop into Windhoek.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 18 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 20 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 20 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 14 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 26 h
  • London (one stop): about 14 h
  • Dubai (one stop): about 12 h

Cross north to Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is easy to add on the way home, and Cape Town sits close to the south.

  • South Africa

Cape Town, the winelands and Big Five safaris near Kruger.

  • Zambia

Livingstone's side of the falls, with Chobe and the Okavango.

  • Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls in full flow and sunsets on the Zambezi.

Answer your Namibia driving questions

Which passports need a visa for Namibia?+
It depends on your passport. Australian passport holders, for example, need a visa, either on arrival or through an online application before travel, and fees apply. Check that the correct entry period is stamped in your passport. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Is it safe to self-drive in Namibia?+
Self-driving is popular, and the main care is on gravel roads, where you keep to around 80 kilometres an hour and drive in daylight. Your travel expert plans fuel stops and realistic driving days.
What length of trip suits Namibia?+
Ten to fourteen days covers Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland and Etosha without rushing. Flying between camps lets you see more in a week.
Is the dry season the right time for Namibia?+
Yes for wildlife, as the dry months from May to October bring animals to Etosha's waterholes, with cold nights in the desert. December to March brings heat, afternoon storms and green grass in the north.
What time should we be at Sossusvlei?+
Lodges close to the Sesriem gate let you reach the dunes at sunrise, when the colours are deepest. Walk into Deadvlei before the midday heat.
Where can we see desert elephants?+
Desert adapted elephants follow the dry riverbeds of Damaraland and the Kunene region, such as the Hoanib and the Huab. Guides track them by vehicle from lodges nearby.
Is Namibia a good choice for a milestone birthday?+
Yes, for travellers who love space and silence. Many lodges have star beds or rooftop decks, and the NamibRand Nature Reserve is an International Dark Sky Reserve.
Is Swakopmund worth a stop?+
Yes. The coastal town breaks up the drive north, with German colonial buildings, seafood and kayaking with seals at Walvis Bay. Mornings are often foggy and cool.
