Two nights at Victoria Falls

3 days · 2 nights

Victoria Falls

A short stay at Victoria Falls, with two nights at a lodge near the town. You arrive in time for a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, spend the next morning with a guide at the falls themselves, and have the rest of that day and your last morning free.

Feel the Zambezi spray on your face

Zimbabwe is the place to step out of the vehicle. Its professional guides train for years before they can lead a walk, and at Mana Pools you follow one on foot along the Zambezi floodplain as elephants rise on their hind legs to reach winter thorn pods. Downstream, canoe safaris drift past hippo and buffalo grazing on the islands.

Victoria Falls is best seen on the Zimbabwe side, where most of the viewpoints face the full width of the falls. Hwange National Park holds lions, wild dogs and big elephant herds in teak and mopane woodland, and the Matobo Hills hide rock art among balancing granite boulders. Lake Kariba ends many trips with houseboats and long sunsets over drowned trees.

Add these days to Zimbabwe

Ways to see Victoria Falls your travel expert can add to any safari.

  • Walk Victoria Falls with a guide

Follow the rainforest path along the gorge with a private guide, stopping at each viewpoint as the spray rises from the falls.

  • Fly over the falls by helicopter

See the whole curtain of water and the zigzag gorges from the air, the view Livingstone imagined angels had.

  • Zip line over the Zambezi gorge

Cross rope bridges and zip lines strung high above the Batoka Gorge, with the falls thundering nearby.

Pair the falls with the wild north

Victoria Falls is the gateway, and the Zambezi valley and Hwange hold the walking and the predators.

  • Victoria Falls

The Zimbabwe side gives the widest views of the falls, with paths through the spray-fed rainforest opposite.

  • The upper Zambezi

Calm water above the falls, with sunset cruises past hippos, elephants on the banks and islands in the river.

Visit Zimbabwe as the bush dries out

The dry months, roughly May to October, concentrate wildlife around water, and the falls run fullest a little earlier in the year.

  • JanuaryMixed

Summer rains, the falls rising and the bush green.

  • FebruaryMixed

Wet and humid, with the river climbing fast.

  • MarchGood

Rains ease, the falls are full and loud.

  • AprilBest

Peak flow with heavy spray, a dramatic time to see the falls.

  • MayBest

Full falls, clear skies and mild days.

  • JuneBest

Cool, dry and still a strong flow over the falls.

  • JulyBest

Dry winter days, clearer views as the spray drops.

  • AugustBest

Dry and warm, good for river cruises and nearby game drives.

  • SeptemberGood

Warm and dry, the falls lower and the gorge more visible.

  • OctoberMixed

The hottest month, with the lowest water of the year.

  • NovemberMixed

Hot with the first rains, the river starts to rise.

  • DecemberMixed

Summer rains return and the bush turns green.

Fly into Victoria Falls via Johannesburg

A short flight out of Johannesburg lands you a few minutes' drive from the falls.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 18 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 20 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 20 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 14 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 27 h
  • London (one stop): about 14 h
  • Dubai (one stop): about 12 h

Cross into Zambia or fly to the Cape

The Zambian side of the falls is across the bridge, and Cape Town is a direct flight south.

  • Zambia

Livingstone's side of the falls, with Chobe and the Okavango.

  • South Africa

Cape Town, the winelands and Big Five safaris near Kruger.

Check what to know about Zimbabwe

Which visa covers both sides of Victoria Falls?+
The KAZA UniVisa covers both sides, allowing multiple entries between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and many passports can apply for it. Australian passport holders, for example, need a visa for Zimbabwe, with a 30 day tourist visa on arrival or through the e-visa platform. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Which side of Victoria Falls is better?+
The Zimbabwe side faces most of the falls, with viewpoints all along the rainforest path. The Zambian side gets you closer to the edge, including Devil's Pool when the water is low.
When should we plan Hwange and the falls?+
The dry months later in the year are best for game viewing in Hwange and Mana Pools, as animals gather at water. The falls run fullest a few months after the rains, when spray can hide the view.
How many nights do the falls and Hwange need?+
Two nights at Victoria Falls and three or four in Hwange make a good week. Mana Pools needs about three more nights for walking and canoeing.
What is a walking safari at Mana Pools like?+
You walk with a licensed professional guide on the open floodplain, often close to elephants feeding on fallen pods. Walks last two to four hours in the cool of the morning.
Where can we celebrate near Victoria Falls?+
A sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi or dinner on a deck above the Batoka Gorge are favourites for anniversaries and birthdays. Your travel expert arranges a private table or boat.
Can beginners join a Zambezi canoe safari?+
Yes. Guided canoe trips suit fit beginners, and guides keep to calm channels away from hippos. Minimum ages apply, so tell your travel expert who is travelling.
