Zambia

Victoria Falls, Chobe and the Okavango

7 days · 6 nights

Livingstone → Victoria Falls → Chobe National Park → Moremi Game Reserve → Maun

You start in Livingstone, staying in a treehouse on the Zambezi just upstream of Victoria Falls, with a guided walk along the falls. You then cross into Botswana for two days among Chobe's elephants. A bush plane takes you to an island camp in the Moremi Game Reserve before you fly out from Maun.

Walk with a guide in South Luangwa

Zambia is where the walking safari began, and on foot in South Luangwa you notice the small things: fresh tracks in the sand, the alarm call of a puku, a leopard resting in a tree in the late light. The camps are small and often sit right on the Luangwa River, and in the green season some of them switch to exploring by boat.

Downstream on the Zambezi, Lower Zambezi National Park is best seen by canoe, as elephants and buffalo graze the islands. Victoria Falls forms Zambia's southern border, and Livingstone makes an easy base with river lodges a short drive away. Late in the year, around ten million fruit bats fill the sky at Kasanka, one of Africa's largest gatherings of mammals.

Try these days out in Zambia

Safari on foot, by canoe and after dark, all planned by your travel expert.

  • Walk between camps in Luangwa

Walk from camp to camp with an armed guide and scout, slowing down to read tracks and watch wildlife at close range in the park where walking safaris began.

  • Sleep out in a dry riverbed

Spend a night under the stars in the bush, wake to lions calling and birdsong, then sit down to breakfast cooked over the fire.

  • Go on a night drive

Head out after dark with a spotlight to find leopards, hyenas and genets, animals you rarely see by day.

  • Canoe the Lower Zambezi

Paddle the side channels of the Zambezi with your river guide, past elephants, hippos and bee eaters at the water's edge.

  • Walk Victoria Falls with a guide

Follow the paths along the gorge with a private guide and feel the spray, then see the falls from the Knife Edge Bridge.

Split your stay across two rivers

South Luangwa is for walking, and the Lower Zambezi is for canoeing beside the elephants.

  • Livingstone and Victoria Falls

The Zambian side of the falls, with the Knife Edge Bridge and, in the low season, swims at the edge.

  • The Zambezi above the falls

Wide, calm river with islands, hippos and elephants, best on a cruise as the sun goes down.

  • Chobe and the Okavango Delta

Across the border in Botswana, river safaris among elephants at Chobe and mokoro trips in the delta.

Go to Zambia when the bush opens

The dry months are best for walking, and the green season brings birds and boat safaris.

  • JanuaryMixed

Summer rains, the falls rising and the bush green.

  • FebruaryMixed

Wet and humid, with high water on the Zambezi.

  • MarchGood

Rains ease, the falls in full, heavy flow.

  • AprilGood

Peak flow over the falls, with spray visible from miles away.

  • MayBest

Full falls, clear skies and the start of the dry season.

  • JuneBest

Cool and dry, the Okavango flood reaches the delta.

  • JulyBest

Dry winter days, elephants gather along the Chobe River.

  • AugustBest

Excellent game viewing in Chobe and the delta.

  • SeptemberBest

Hot, dry days and the best game viewing of the year.

  • OctoberGood

The hottest month, with the lowest water at the falls.

  • NovemberMixed

First rains and high heat, the bush turns green.

  • DecemberMixed

Summer rains return and the river begins to rise.

Fly to Lusaka or Livingstone via Johannesburg

Johannesburg connects with both, and light aircraft take you onward to the camps.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 18 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 20 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 20 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 14 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 27 h
  • London (one stop): about 14 h
  • Dubai (one stop): about 12 h

Add Zimbabwe or the Cape

The Zimbabwe side of the falls is across the bridge, and Cape Town suits a few days of wine and dining at the end.

  • Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls in full flow and sunsets on the Zambezi.

  • South Africa

Cape Town, the winelands and Big Five safaris near Kruger.

  • Namibia

Red dunes at Sossusvlei, the coast at Swakopmund and Etosha.

Learn what Zambia safaris involve

Is a visa required for Zambia?+
It depends on your passport. Australian passport holders, for example, do not need a visa and can stay 90 days in any 12 month period, with a return ticket if arriving by air. A KAZA UniVisa covers Zambia and Zimbabwe if you cross at Victoria Falls. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
Why is Zambia known for walking safaris?+
Walking safaris began in South Luangwa in the 1950s under Norman Carr. Today you walk with a qualified guide and an armed scout.
Should we visit Zambia in the dry or green season?+
The dry season in the middle of the year is best for walking and game viewing, with heat building towards October. The green season brings birds, boat safaris and fewer visitors, and some camps close.
How many camps should a Zambia safari include?+
Two or three camps over eight to ten nights covers South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi and Victoria Falls. Light aircraft connect them through Lusaka.
Can we canoe on the Lower Zambezi?+
Yes. Guided canoe trips glide along the side channels past elephants and hippos. Camps set minimum ages for canoeing.
When can we swim in Devil's Pool?+
Devil's Pool on the lip of Victoria Falls opens when the water is low, usually from about August to January. Guided trips leave from Livingstone Island.
Where can we celebrate under the stars in Zambia?+
Some South Luangwa camps offer star beds on raised platforms, and a private dinner in a dry riverbed is a favourite for anniversaries. Your travel expert arranges it with the camp.
When do the bats arrive at Kasanka?+
Straw coloured fruit bats gather at Kasanka from late October to about December, filling the sky at dusk. Hides in the trees give you the best view.
