See why couples marry in Indonesia

What draws couples to Indonesia, place by place.

  • Clifftops above the Indian Ocean

Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula set the ceremony high on clifftops above the Indian Ocean.

  • Rice terraces around Ubud

Marry with Ubud's terraced rice fields and river valleys around you, green and calm away from the coast.

  • Balinese dance and temple life

Bali is largely Hindu, and temple ceremonies, offerings and dance shape daily life guests pass on the way to dinner.

  • Sunset at a sea temple

Watch the sun drop behind Tanah Lot, a temple on a rock off Bali's west coast.

  • Sunrise on Mount Batur

Guests can climb the active volcano before dawn, about 2 hours up, for sunrise over the caldera.

  • Nusa Penida by boat

Take a boat across the Badung Strait to Nusa Penida for its dramatic coastal lookouts.

Know the legal side before you set a date

Complex: visitors can marry legally, but Indonesian law requires a religious ceremony and both partners to share one of the 6 religions the government recognises.

The steps, in order:

1. Confirm your shared religion: you must both follow the same recognised religion: Islam, Protestant Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism or Confucianism. Find a religious officiant who will marry foreign couples. 2. Contact the Civil Registry Office: contact the Dinas Kependudukan or Kantor Catatan Sipil for the regency where you will marry, as document rules vary by district. 3. Get a no impediment certificate: australians apply at the Embassy in Jakarta or Consulate-General in Denpasar. US citizens sign a statement before a US consular officer, and UK nationals swear an affidavit at a British Embassy appointment in Jakarta or Bali. 4. Lodge the intention notice: for a non-Muslim ceremony, lodge it with the Civil Registry Office at least 10 days before the wedding. 5. Marry and register: hold the religious ceremony, then register with the Civil Registry Office, which issues the Akta Perkawinan. A Muslim ceremony is held at the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA), which issues a marriage book. 6. Order copies and legalise: order extra certified copies before you leave, as Indonesia has no central marriage register. Translate the certificate into English and legalise it if asked; US citizens use the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the US Embassy.

Choose your month in Indonesia

Choose a month that suits the region you marry in.

Wettest stretch of the year, plan an indoor or covered backup.

  • AprilGood

Wet season ending, greener landscapes, fewer crowds than mid-year.

  • MayBest

Drier, less humid shoulder month with smaller crowds.

  • JuneBest

Dry season settled in, before the July peak.

  • OctoberGood

Still a shoulder month, though the first wet weather can arrive.

  • NovemberMixed

Wet season starts, local flooding possible on main roads.

Questions couples ask about marrying in Indonesia

What if we follow different religions or none?+
Under Indonesian law, partners of different faiths cannot marry unless one converts first. Most couples in this position marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Bali.
Will our Bali marriage be recognised at home?+
A marriage legally performed in Indonesia is accepted in Australia if it would have been legal there, and the US generally recognises marriages registered in Indonesia. UK nationals do not need to register an overseas marriage in the UK.
How far ahead do we need our paperwork?+
Non-Muslim couples lodge notice with the Civil Registry at least 10 days before the wedding. Get your Certificate of No Impediment close to the date, as many offices reject ones older than 3 months.
What is Nyepi and does it affect our dates?+
Nyepi is Bali's Day of Silence, usually in March, when everyone stays indoors and the airport closes for the day. Check the date before you lock in travel, and avoid it for arrivals, departures and events.
What safety advice should we pass on to guests?+
Point guests to Smartraveller, the US State Department or FCDO before they travel. The main risks named are rabies, dengue and methanol in drinks, so guests should avoid animals, use repellent and drink only from reputable venues.
Can we book a whole resort in Bali just for our wedding guests?+
Yes, several Bali properties are booked for exclusive use. Bali Beach Glamping in Tabanan hands your group all 50 tents, the beach and the lawn. Glamp Nusa sleeps up to 100 guests in 40 clifftop tents, COMO Uma Ubud offers a buyout of all 46 rooms and villas, and Villa Vedas hosts 1 wedding at a time. Your advisor can match the right buyout to your guest list.
Which Bali venues can host a really big wedding?+
Nusa Dua and Jimbaran hold the island's largest spaces. Grand Hyatt Bali has a pillarless ballroom seating 736 for dinner and outdoor gardens for up to 1,500, Renaissance Bali Nusa Dua's Mainstage takes up to 1,100, and AYANA Bali's Champa Garden is a lawn for up to 3,000 at a reception. These resorts also have hundreds of rooms, so the whole group stays on one site.
Are kids welcome at Bali weddings?+
At most family resorts, yes. Grand Hyatt Bali has the Oceania Kids Club, Jumeirah Bali the Peafowl Kids Club and MERUSAKA Nusa Dua the Tamaya Kids Land, while Glamp Nusa welcomes children at every event. A few places lean adult: Kayumanis Nusa Dua describes itself as adult-oriented, and Renaissance Bali Uluwatu sets a minimum check-in age of 18. Your advisor will confirm each venue's child policy early.
