See Bali through new eyes

Many travellers know Bali, but few have woken in a villa above the Ayung River with mist on the valley and an offering of frangipani already on the step. A private guide shows you the water temples and rice terraces around Ubud in the cool of the morning, and the afternoons are yours for the pool or the spa. With a good guide, you may be invited to watch a temple ceremony along the way.

Then go further. On Java, Borobudur rises out of the plain at sunrise, and Prambanan's temples sit a short drive from Yogyakarta. Mount Bromo's crater draws early risers, while the Gili Islands offer white sand and turtles a boat ride off Lombok. In Sulawesi, the Toraja highlands keep their own customs and carved houses.

Share in Indonesia's daily rituals

Guides and village hosts share the ceremonies and cooking that shape daily life on Bali and Java.

  • A Balinese blessing in Ubud

Take part in a traditional blessing at a village temple, followed by meditation and quiet rituals guided by people who live by them.

  • Cook at home with a Balinese family

Walk through a village with a local healer in the morning, then cook Balinese dishes in a family kitchen and share the meal together.

  • Walk the farmland of Sidemen

Trek through vegetable gardens, rice fields and villages in Sidemen, a green valley of waterfalls and hills that few visitors reach.

  • Borobudur at sunrise

Climb a hill before dawn to watch the first light reach Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, rising out of the morning mist.

  • Prambanan and the sultan's palace

Explore Prambanan, Indonesia's largest Hindu temple site, then visit the old royal quarter of Yogyakarta where the sultans still keep court.

  • Village life by bike in Java

Cycle the quiet lanes around Borobudur, past farms and villages, stopping to see how rice and crafts are made.

Choose which Indonesian islands to add

Ubud and the south coast are only the start, and Java makes a rewarding second stop.

  • Ubud

Bali's cultural heart, with rice terraces, river valleys, temple ceremonies and craft villages in the green hills north of the coast.

  • South Bali

Beach towns from Kuta and Legian to Sanur, with surf, sunsets and the clifftop temple at Uluwatu close by.

  • Yogyakarta and Bromo

Java's royal city, the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan, and sunrise over the smoking crater of Mount Bromo.

  • The Gili Islands

Three small car free islands off Lombok, with white sand, clear water and turtles on the reefs around Gili Trawangan.

  • Sulawesi and Toraja

Fly from Makassar into the highlands of Tana Toraja, known for carved tongkonan houses and cliffside burial sites.

Catch Indonesia in the dry season

  • JanuaryMixed

The wettest month in Bali and Java, with a warm sea and heavy afternoon showers.

  • FebruaryMixed

Still wet season, with green rice fields and fewer travellers in Ubud.

  • Sydney (non-stop): about 6.5 h
  • Melbourne (non-stop): about 6.5 h
  • Brisbane (non-stop): about 6 h
  • Perth (non-stop): about 3.5 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 21 h
  • London (one stop): about 17 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 9.5 h

Finish in Singapore or Malaysia

Both are a short flight from Bali, and Singapore makes an easy last stop before home.

  • Singapore

Gardens, hawker centres and a skyline made for evenings.

  • Malaysia

Langkawi's islands, rainforest and the street food of Penang.

Prepare for Bali and beyond

Which months suit Komodo boat trips?+
Komodo's seas are calmest in the drier months mid year, which suits liveaboard cruises and diving with manta rays. Bali stays warm all year, so your travel expert builds the rest of the trip around the boat dates.
How many islands can we fit into two weeks?+
Two weeks suits three islands at most, such as Java for Borobudur, Bali for Ubud and the coast, and a few nights on a boat around Komodo. Each move takes half a day, so fewer stops leave more time on the water.
Is Ubud or the coast better for a Bali honeymoon?+
Ubud's jungle villas suit couples who like rice terraces, spas and cooler nights, while Uluwatu has cliff-top villas over the Indian Ocean. Many honeymooners split their stay, and your travel expert adds a private dinner on the night it matters most.
Can we see Komodo dragons safely?+
Yes. Rangers lead every walk on Komodo and Rinca islands and keep a set distance from the dragons. Most visits start in Labuan Bajo, a short flight from Bali.
Do we need to cover up at Balinese temples?+
Yes. Visitors wear a sarong and sash at temples, which most sites lend at the gate, and shoulders should be covered. Your guide carries spares so you are never turned away.
Can we combine Bali with Lombok or the Gili Islands?+
Yes. Fast boats and short flights link Bali with Lombok, and the Gili Islands sit just off its coast with no cars at all. Two or three nights there suits a quieter end to a Bali stay.
