Tortuguero
Day 1 · Tortuguero
An early shared transfer leaves San José for the Caribbean side, stopping for breakfast on the way, then a boat carries you to your lodge. After lunch a guide takes you out on the canals, where the waterways narrow and the wildlife comes closer the deeper you go.
Day 2 · Tortuguero
In the morning your guide walks you along the lodge's private trails, looking for birds, reptiles and the monkeys that are common here. In the afternoon you visit Tortuguero village, home to around 500 people on a narrow strip of land between the beach and a canal, with no cars.
San José
Day 3 · San José
After breakfast, travel back by boat and road to Guápiles for lunch, then on to San José, arriving around mid-afternoon.

Fly into San José and head north to La Fortuna, at the foot of the Arenal Volcano, for two nights of hot springs, a gentle river float and lunch with a local family. Cross Lake Arenal by boat to Monteverde for a guided walk in the cloud forest, then return to the airport on day four.
