Day 1 · La Fortuna
Make your way to La Fortuna, in the shadow of Arenal Volcano, and check in. The rest of the day is free for the hotel's thermal pools and gardens, or the restaurants and craft shops of the town.
Day 2 · La Fortuna
A naturalist guide leads a slow walk along forest trails and reforested corridors where sloths come to feed, watching for both the two-toed and three-toed species. Toucans, motmots, frogs, basilisks and coatis are often seen along the way, and the afternoon is free.
Monteverde
Day 3 · Monteverde
Drive to the lake and cross by motorboat, about an hour with the volcano behind you, then continue by road up into the cloud forest. After dark, a guide takes you along forest trails with lights to find kinkajous, sleeping birds, tree frogs and glowing insects.
Day 4 · Monteverde
A free morning to walk around the town or enjoy the cool mountain air before you travel on.
