See why couples marry in Thailand

What draws couples to Thailand, place by place.

  • Limestone islands of Phang Nga

Koh Yao is a quiet island base in Phang Nga Bay, where limestone islands rise straight from the water.

  • Sunset bays of Phuket

Phuket's west coast is a chain of bays facing the Andaman sunset, from Bang Thao to Kata.

  • Hillside villas on Koh Samui

Hillside villas look out over Samui's bays, with the 42 islands of Ang Thong Marine Park offshore.

  • Lanna temples of Chiang Mai

Temples on almost every block, mountains on every side and cool evenings from mid-October to mid-February.

  • Quiet beaches of Khao Lak

Long, quiet beaches backed by forested hills, with the Similan Islands' reefs a boat ride offshore.

  • Hua Hin's long Gulf beach

Hua Hin's long Gulf of Thailand beach comes with a busy night market and the temple hill at Khao Takiab.

Know the legal side before you set a date

Yes: visitors can legally marry by registering at a Thai district office (Amphoe), and an unregistered ceremony has no legal effect under Thai law.

The steps, in order:

1. Get your embassy document: each foreign partner gets one from their own embassy in Thailand. Australians need a Certificate of No Impediment from the Embassy in Bangkok or Consulate-General in Phuket; British nationals need a marital status affirmation. 2. Attend your embassy appointment: attend in person with original passports and any divorce, death or name change certificates. 3. Translate the documents into Thai: have the embassy documents translated into Thai by a translation agency. 4. Legalise the translated documents: have the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs legalise them at a legalisation office, such as Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai. 5. Register at the district office: take the legalised documents and passports to a district office (Amphoe) and register the marriage, ideally with an interpreter. 6. Receive your certificate and celebrate: receive your Thai marriage certificate, then hold your ceremony and celebration at your chosen venue.

Choose your month in Thailand

Choose a month that suits the region you marry in.

  • JanuaryBest

Andaman coast dry and calm, Chiang Mai cool, Samui drying out.

  • FebruaryBest

Dry on both coasts, Chiang Mai cool season ends mid-month.

  • MarchBest

Hot season starts, both coasts dry and sunny.

  • AprilGood

Hottest month, plan ceremonies for late afternoon.

  • MayMixed

Andaman monsoon starts, Samui and the Gulf still mostly dry.

  • JuneMixed

Andaman wet with rough seas, Samui a good choice.

  • JulyMixed

Andaman showers, Samui and Hua Hin usually better.

  • AugustMixed

Wettest period nationally, Samui is the safest beach pick.

  • SeptemberMixed

Andaman and Chiang Mai very wet, Samui still workable.

  • OctoberMixed

Andaman rains ease, Gulf rains begin late month.

  • NovemberGood

Andaman and Chiang Mai good, Samui at its wettest.

  • DecemberGood

Andaman and Chiang Mai excellent, Samui heavy rain early month.

See the best of Thailand around the wedding

Places your guests will want to see before or after the celebration.

  • Wat Arun, Bangkok

Take a long-tail boat on the Chao Phraya River to see the Temple of Dawn lit at dusk.

  • Ayutthaya's temple ruins

Explore brick prangs and temple ruins of the former Siamese capital, a day trip from Bangkok.

  • Maya Bay, Phi Phi

Sail from Phuket or Krabi into the cliff-ringed bay on Koh Phi Phi Leh.

  • Railay Beach, Krabi

Reach Railay by long-tail boat for limestone cliffs, rock climbing and swimming off the sand.

  • The White Temple, Chiang Rai

Wat Rong Khun, a contemporary temple of white plaster and mirrored glass, sits just south of Chiang Rai.

  • Phuket's Big Buddha

The white marble Buddha on Nakkerd Hill looks out over Kata and Chalong Bay.

Questions couples ask about marrying in Thailand

Is a symbolic ceremony a good option?+
Yes, and it is very common. Many couples sign the legal paperwork at home, for example at an Australian registry office, then hold a symbolic ceremony in Thailand with all the same styling and rituals.
Is Thailand safe for a wedding group?+
The main wedding regions are popular and well set up for visitors. Read Smartraveller, travel.state.gov or FCDO advice, swim only at patrolled beaches in monsoon months and keep an eye on drinks at night.
Can we include Thai Buddhist or Lanna traditions in our ceremony?+
Yes, and several resorts run them in house. Amora Beach Resort in Phuket offers a water blessing with merit-making offerings for 3 monks and garlands for the couple. In Chiang Mai, Veranda High Resort hosts Lanna rituals such as the Khan Mak procession and Bai Sri Su Kwan wrist-binding. Anantara Koh Yao Yai follows Thai rites including the exchange of floral garlands. Your advisor can pair a blessing with Western vows.
Do Thai resorts host Indian and Chinese weddings?+
Yes. The Centara resorts in Hua Hin, Koh Samui and Phuket all list Western, Thai, Indian and Chinese ceremonies. Anantara Koh Yao Yai runs multi-day Indian weddings, with a Haldi by the main pool, marquee evenings on the lawn and a Baraat leading to a beach ceremony. Thavorn Beach Village in Phuket plans Indian festivities and folds in cultural details from your own background.
Which Thai venues can take a very large guest list?+
The biggest rooms are in Phuket and Hua Hin. Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket combines its ballroom into 576 square metres for up to 780 people. In Hua Hin, the Topiary Garden at Centara Grand takes up to 500. Amora Beach Resort's ballroom holds 350, and Amari Koh Samui hosts more than 250 on Chaweng Beach. Your advisor can match venue size to your final numbers.
What is there for children at a Thai wedding?+
Plenty, as many resorts are built for families. Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket has a water park, lazy river and Camp Safari Kids' Club running from 09:00 to 18:00. Anantara Koh Yao Yai has a family pool with 4 water slides and its own Kids' Club. Amari Koh Samui pairs a kids' club with a water park, and Veranda High Resort in Chiang Mai has a children's pool.
Can we marry on a boat or a pier in Thailand?+
Yes, in Phuket. Cape Panwa Hotel holds ceremonies on board the Panwa Princess for up to 40 guests. Thavorn Beach Village has AMOR, a 185-metre private pier over the Andaman Sea used for vows and private dinners. At Amari Phuket, The Jetty stretches over Patong Bay for smaller ceremonies and sunset photos. Your advisor can plan a dinner on land to follow.
