Settle into Portugal's Atlantic rhythm

Travellers tend to fall for Portugal quickly. The light is soft, the coastline is wild, and lunch is grilled fish with a glass of vinho verde in a town where nobody hurries you. It is a small country, so you spend more time enjoying places and less time getting between them.

Lisbon spreads over its hills above the Tagus, with tiled façades, tram lines and fado in Alfama. Porto sits at the mouth of the Douro, and upriver the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley make the best case for hiring a car or a driver. Coimbra's old university, the walled town of Évora and the Algarve's cliffs and coves round out a first trip, with Madeira and the Azores for a second.

Shop for fresh produce at a city market with a local chef, then return to the kitchen to cook and share a Portuguese lunch.

  • Taste your way around Porto

Check the Portugal details before you fly

Does Portugal count toward my Schengen days?+
Yes. Portugal is part of the Schengen area, where Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, including any time in Spain or France on the same trip. The EU's Entry/Exit System now takes your fingerprints and photo at your first Schengen border, and ETIAS has not started yet. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
Should we drive or take the train between Lisbon and Porto?+
The fast train links Lisbon and Porto in about three hours, centre to centre, and suits a city-only trip. A car or private driver makes more sense if you want the Douro Valley, Óbidos or the Alentejo along the way.
When is harvest season in the Douro Valley?+
The grape harvest usually runs through September into early October, when the quintas are busiest and the terraces turn gold. Overall, May, June and September give warm days and calmer beaches on the Algarve.
How many nights do you need in Lisbon, Porto and the Douro?+
Plan three nights in Lisbon, two in Porto and two or three at a quinta in the Douro Valley. With the Algarve added, ten to twelve days lets you travel without rushing.
Where should we stay for a honeymoon in the Douro or the Algarve?+
A quinta in the Douro Valley gives you vineyard views, a private tasting and a boat on the river at sunset. On the Algarve, a clifftop resort near Lagos or Carvoeiro suits beach days, and your travel expert can add a private yacht along the coast.
Are Madeira and the Azores worth a separate trip?+
Both reward a few nights each. Madeira has levada walks and a mild climate all year, and the Azores have volcanic lakes, hot springs and whale watching. Each is a short flight from Lisbon.
What should we eat and drink in Portugal?+
Try grilled sardines in Lisbon, pastéis de nata warm from the oven and a francesinha in Porto. In the Douro, tawny and vintage ports are tasted at the quintas where they are made, and vinho verde comes from the Minho in the north.
