You are met at Terceira airport and collect your hire car for the short drive to Angra do Heroísmo. Walk Rua Direita to the cathedral, wander the Duque da Terceira garden and try a Dona Amélia tart, then drive up Monte Brasil, a nature reserve on the south coast, to watch the sun set over the town.

A guided day in a shared van: Monte Brasil, the villages of the east coast to Praia da Vitória, and the views from Serra do Facho and Serra do Cume over the island's patchwork of fields. After lunch, head inland to Algar do Carvão and the volcanic vents of Furnas do Enxofre, then on to the rock pools and wine museum at Biscoitos, the Negro and Patas lakes, and a cheese tasting at a local dairy.

Day 3 · Angra do Heroísmo
After an early breakfast, drive to the whale watching centre for a briefing at around 8.30 am and about three hours at sea, looking for whales, dolphins, turtles and seabirds. You are back by midday with the afternoon free, and in the evening the local alcatra, beef slow cooked in a clay pot, is worth seeking out.

After breakfast, drive back to Terceira airport and return the car before your flight.
