Meet the group at 8.30 from a central Madrid hotel and travel west to Salamanca, a UNESCO-listed university city, for free time among its historic buildings. Cross into Portugal and arrive in Porto for the evening.
Porto
Day 2 · Porto
A guided morning around Porto takes in the cathedral, the Stock Exchange building and the church of Santa Clara. Then see the city from the water on a Douro river cruise and visit a port wine cellar for a tasting. The rest of the day is yours.
Coimbra and Fátima
Day 3 · Coimbra and Fátima
Stop in Coimbra, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, for time on your own. Continue to the sanctuary at Fátima, with its basilica and the Chapel of the Apparitions at the heart of the Cova da Iria. In the evening, conditions permitting, you can join the candle procession.
Lisbon
Day 4 · Lisbon
Visit the Batalha Monastery, a UNESCO-listed work of Gothic and Manueline building, then spend free time in the fishing town of Nazaré on its sandy beach. At Alcobaça, another UNESCO site, see the 12th century church and the tombs of Pedro and Inês de Castro before the last drive to Lisbon.
Day 5 · Lisbon
A guided morning tour passes the Belém Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery, the Coach Museum and the Monument to the Discoveries, then the city’s grand squares and avenues. Spend the afternoon in Alfama, the old quarter below the castle, where fado plays in small taverns late into the night.
Mérida and Madrid
Day 6 · Mérida and Madrid
Drive east into Spain to Mérida, known for its Roman theatre, amphitheatre and bridge, for free time before continuing to Madrid. The journey ends at about 7pm.
