Day 1 · Costa del Sol
Collect your hire car at Málaga airport and drive to your hotel on the coast. The rest of the day is for the beach, the warm sea and a first look at the white villages in the hills behind.
Ronda and Seville
Day 2 · Ronda and Seville
Drive up into the Serranía de Ronda to Ronda, split in two by the El Tajo gorge. On one side is the old Moorish quarter of whitewashed lanes and iron balconies, on the other the newer town and its Plaza de Toros, one of Spain’s oldest bullrings. Continue to Seville for the night.
Seville
Day 3 · Seville
Spend the day at the Royal Alcázar, a palace begun in the 10th century and added to over the centuries, and the cathedral under the Giralda tower. Finish in Santa Cruz, the former Jewish quarter, a maze of whitewashed lanes and patios.
Évora and Lisbon
Day 4 · Évora and Lisbon
Cross into Portugal to Évora, a UNESCO-listed walled town whose buildings span Roman, Visigothic, Moorish and Christian rule. Walk its streets before driving on to Lisbon.
Lisbon
Day 5 · Lisbon
Wander the steep lanes and stairways of Alfama, the oldest quarter, then head out to Belém for the riverside tower, the Monument to the Discoveries and the Jerónimos Monastery with its Manueline carving. The evening is a good time to hear fado, Lisbon’s own music.
Huelva
Day 6 · Huelva
Drive south and back into Spain, with a stop in Albufeira on the way. At La Rábida, step aboard replicas of the three ships Columbus sailed to the Americas and visit the monastery where he prepared for the voyage, then continue to Huelva.
Costa del Sol
Day 7 · Costa del Sol
See Huelva’s Plaza de las Monjas and the Cathedral of La Merced, or look for flamingos in the protected wetlands of the Marismas del Odiel, before driving back to the Costa del Sol.
Málaga
Day 8 · Málaga
Breakfast, then drive to Málaga airport and return the car before your flight.
