Casablanca → Tangier → Chefchaouen → Fes → Volubilis → Rabat → Marrakech

You land in Casablanca and take a high-speed train north to Tangier to walk its kasbah and old medina. Next come the blue alleyways of Chefchaouen, the medieval souks of Fes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Rabat's Oudaya Kasbah and three days in Marrakech complete the circle.

Step into Morocco's riads and souks

Morocco is full of thresholds. Step off a crowded lane in the Marrakech medina into a riad courtyard and you hear only a fountain and birds. Marrakech has traded for close to a thousand years under the snowy High Atlas, and Fez keeps one of the world's oldest universities inside a vast, car free medina.

Over the mountains, the road south passes kasbahs and oasis valleys on its way to Ouarzazate and the dunes near Erfoud, where you sleep in a desert camp under the stars. On the Atlantic, Essaouira has white walls and a harbour full of fishing boats. Moroccan cooking is a highlight throughout, and the Amazigh people of the mountains are warm hosts.

Try these days out in Morocco

Ways to go deeper in Morocco, each one planned by your travel expert.

  • Cook tagine with a local chef

Pick vegetables and herbs at a farm in an Amazigh village outside Marrakech, then cook a tagine with the chef and sit down to eat it.

  • Taste the Atlas Mountains

Drive into the High Atlas by four wheel drive to the villages of Asni and Imlil, tasting local food along the way.

  • Ride Marrakech by vintage sidecar

See the backstreets, gardens and palm groves of Marrakech from the sidecar of a vintage motorcycle, with a local guide driving.

  • Balloon over Marrakech at dawn

Float over the villages, the Jbilet hills and the Tensift valley at sunrise, with the High Atlas on the horizon on clear days.

  • Throw pots with a Fez artisan

Learn to shape traditional pots with a master potter in Fez, the city known for its glazed blue tiles and ceramics.

  • Lunch at a Middle Atlas vineyard

Tour the cellars at Château Roslane near Meknes, then sit down to a long lunch paired with its wines.

Leave the medinas for the desert

Marrakech and Fez hold the souks, and the Sahara gives you silence after them.

  • Fes, Meknes and Volubilis

The maze of the Fes medina and its tanneries, with Roman mosaics at Volubilis and the imperial gates of Meknes.

  • Marrakech and Ouarzazate

Gardens, palaces and the Jemaa el Fna square, then over the High Atlas to the kasbahs of Ouarzazate.

  • The Sahara near Erfoud

Golden dunes at Erg Chebbi, camel rides at sunset and a night in a desert camp.

Prepare for the medinas and the desert

How long can I stay in Morocco visa free?+
It depends on your passport. Australian passport holders, for example, generally don't need a visa for visits under 90 days, and neither do UK, US or most EU passport holders. Overstaying can stop you leaving until it is resolved. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
How long is the drive from Marrakech to the Sahara?+
It is about nine to ten hours to Merzouga over the High Atlas, so most trips break it with a night in the Dades Valley or Ouarzazate. The stony Agafay desert is under an hour from Marrakech.
Which seasons are kindest for Morocco?+
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summer is very hot inland and in the desert, and winter brings snow to the High Atlas and cold desert nights.
How much time does Morocco need?+
Ten days covers Marrakech, Fez and a night in the Sahara. With two weeks you can add Chefchaouen or the coast at Essaouira.
Should we stay in a riad or a hotel?+
Riads are traditional houses built around a courtyard inside the medina, often with only a few rooms. Many travellers stay in a riad in Fez and a hotel with gardens in Marrakech.
Is Fez or Marrakech better?+
Marrakech has livelier squares, gardens and stylish hotels, while Fez has the larger, older medina and the tanneries. Most travellers see both.
Can we celebrate an anniversary in the Sahara?+
Yes. Desert camps can set a private dinner among the dunes with lanterns, and some tents have private bathrooms and a deck for stargazing. Your travel expert tells the camp about the occasion.
Are guides needed in the Fez medina?+
The Fez medina has thousands of lanes and few signs, so a licensed guide saves time and finds the workshops worth seeing. Your travel expert books one for your first morning.
