How does the Schengen 90-day limit work for a Spain trip?+
Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders, for example, can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period visa-free across the Schengen area, and days in Spain, Portugal or France all count toward the same total. The EU's Entry/Exit System now records your fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border, and ETIAS has not started yet. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
Is it easy to drive in Andalucía?+
Motorways between Seville, Córdoba, Granada and Málaga are good and quiet, and the drives rarely run past three hours. Old town centres are narrow and often closed to cars, so we choose hotels with parking or valet service.
Do I need to book the Alhambra in advance?+
Yes. Tickets for the Nasrid Palaces are released for set entry times and sell out weeks ahead in spring and autumn. Your travel expert books a timed entry with a private guide, so you see the palaces before the crowds.
When is it too hot to visit southern Spain?+
July and August often pass 40°C in Seville and Córdoba, so the south is best in spring and in September and October. Summer suits the north instead, where San Sebastián and Galicia stay mild.
How long do you need for Madrid, Andalucía and the north?+
Ten days covers Madrid and the three great cities of Andalucía at an easy pace. Add four or five nights for San Sebastián and the Basque coast, or a few days in Barcelona.
Where in Spain suits a honeymoon or milestone birthday?+
Couples love a suite in a converted palace in Seville or Granada, then a few nights on Mallorca. For a birthday, a private dinner at one of San Sebastián's Michelin-starred restaurants or a flamenco night in a Triana tablao makes the evening.
What time do people eat dinner in Spain?+
Lunch is usually around two or three, and dinner rarely starts before nine, later in summer. Restaurants that open earlier tend to cater for visitors, so we book tables at the hours locals eat.
Can we combine Spain with Portugal or Morocco?+
Yes. Seville is about two hours' drive from the Algarve, and Lisbon is a short flight from Madrid. Tangier is a ferry ride across the Strait of Gibraltar, and Marrakech is a short flight from Málaga.
