San Jose
Day 1 · San Jose
You are met at the airport, helped with your bags and taken to your hotel for the night. Get some rest, as tomorrow starts early.
Tortuguero
Day 2 · Tortuguero
An early shared transfer takes you to the north Caribbean coast, where a boat carries you on to your lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon, walk the lodge's own rainforest trails looking for reptiles, birds and the monkeys that are common here. Dinner is at the lodge.
Day 3 · Tortuguero
Set out early with a naturalist guide by boat through the canals, lagoons and rainforest, home to dozens of reptile, amphibian and mammal species, then return for breakfast. In the afternoon visit Tortuguero village, a car-free community of about 500 people on a narrow strip of land between the beach and a canal.
Arenal
Day 4 · Arenal
Travel by boat and road to the Guapiles area, stopping for lunch, then on by shared transfer to La Fortuna at the foot of the Arenal Volcano. The rest of the day is free at the hotel.
Day 5 · Arenal
A guided hike along the base and flanks of the volcano, where your guide explains its eruptions and history and points out marks left by past activity. In the late afternoon, soak in thermal pools of different temperatures, moving between warm and cool water as you please.
Monteverde
Day 6 · Monteverde
Cross Lake Arenal by pontoon boat to Rio Chiquito, about 30 to 40 minutes, then continue by road to Monteverde. In the afternoon, walk a circuit of hanging bridges and platforms through the cloud forest canopy.
Tamarindo
Day 7 · Tamarindo
A shared transfer takes you from the hills to Tamarindo on the north Pacific coast, one of Costa Rica's best known surf beaches.
Day 8 · Tamarindo
Relax under the palms, swim or surf, or explore the beaches and town around Tamarindo at your own pace.
San Jose
Day 9 · San Jose
A private transfer, timed to your flight, takes you from Tamarindo to Juan Santamaria International Airport.
