Day 1 · San José
You are met at Juan Santamaría International Airport and driven privately to your hotel for your first night.
Arenal
Day 2 · Arenal
After an early breakfast, travel northwest to La Fortuna, at the foot of Arenal Volcano. The rest of the day is free, perhaps for the volcanic hot springs at Tabacón.
Day 3 · Arenal
A guide walks you through the national park and explains the volcano's past eruptions, with an eye out for sloths, howler monkeys and anteaters. The afternoon is free, or you can head out after dark on a guided night walk in the rainforest.
Tortuguero
Day 4 · Tortuguero
An early start takes you to Guápiles, with breakfast on the way, then by boat along the rivers and canals to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon you visit Tortuguero village and its beach, and in hatching season look for young turtles making for the sea.
Day 5 · Tortuguero
A three-hour trip into the national park, home to hundreds of bird species as well as monkeys, crocodiles and sloths, with free time at the pool. From July to September you can join a late-night turtle nesting walk, or try the canopy course at any time of year.
Puerto Viejo
Day 6 · Puerto Viejo
Take the boat back to Guápiles for lunch, then a shared transfer down the coast to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the town's Caribbean pace and Afro-Caribbean culture.
Cahuita
Day 7 · Cahuita
Board a small boat with a captain and guide to snorkel for about two hours over the coral reef off Cahuita National Park, with equipment provided. Then walk 3.5 km with a naturalist guide from Cahuita Point to the village, watching for sloths, monkeys and anteaters, before a Caribbean lunch and a free afternoon.
San José
Day 8 · San José
A slow morning on the coast, then an early afternoon transfer back to San José for a last evening in the city.
Day 9 · San José
After breakfast, a private transfer takes you to the airport for your flight home or onward.
