Day 1 · San José
You are met at Juan Santamaría airport and taken by shared transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for your first night in Costa Rica.
Arenal
Day 2 · Arenal
After an early breakfast the hire company brings your car to the hotel. Drive northwest to La Fortuna, at the foot of Arenal Volcano, and spend the rest of the day settling in.
Day 3 · Arenal
A free day around the volcano. Walk the national park trails, guided or on your own, and look out for sloths, howler monkeys and anteaters in the forest.
Tortuguero
Day 4 · Tortuguero
Drive to Guápiles for breakfast, meet your guide and leave the car parked there. A shared transfer and a boat ride through the canals bring you to your lodge for lunch, then you visit Tortuguero village and its beach. From September to December you may see hatchling turtles heading for the sea.
Day 5 · Tortuguero
A three-hour guided trip through the national park by boat, watching for birds, monkeys, crocodiles and sloths. The rest of the day is yours at the lodge.
Puerto Viejo
Day 6 · Puerto Viejo
Return by boat to Guápiles for lunch and collect your car. Drive south to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and spend the rest of the day in its easy, Afro-Caribbean seaside rhythm.
Day 7 · Puerto Viejo
A free day on the coast. Nearby Cahuita National Park protects the country's most important coral reef, with snorkelling over the reef and a coastal forest trail where sloths and monkeys are often seen.
San José
Day 8 · San José
A slow morning by the sea, then drive back to the capital in the early afternoon for your last night.
Day 9 · San José
After breakfast, drop the car at the hire office and take the shared shuttle to the airport for your flight.
