Look over the sea at Sidi Bou Said

Tunisia surprises travellers who expect only beaches. Sidi Bou Said sits on a cliff above the Gulf of Tunis, all white walls and blue doors, and below it lie the ruins of Carthage, once the great rival of Rome. In Tunis, the Bardo Museum holds one of the world's finest collections of Roman mosaics, and the medina is a World Heritage site.

Inland, the amphitheatre at El Jem is among the best preserved anywhere, and the great mosque of Kairouan is one of the oldest in Africa. The south turns to desert, with palm oases at Tozeur, cave homes at Matmata and the dunes beyond Douz. Djerba, an island off the southern coast, is the calm place to finish.

Ask the common questions about Tunisia

What are Tunisia's entry rules?+
It depends on your passport. Australian citizens, for example, don't need a visa for visits of 90 days or less, and your passport should be valid for at least six months. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Which Roman sites should we see in Tunisia?+
El Jem's amphitheatre, Dougga's hilltop town and Carthage near Tunis are the highlights, and the Bardo Museum holds the mosaics. All three ruins are World Heritage sites.
When is Tunisia pleasant for both coast and desert?+
Spring and autumn are comfortable for the ruins and the desert alike. Summer suits the beaches, and the Sahara is very hot then.
Can Tunisia be seen in a week?+
A week covers Tunis, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, El Jem and Kairouan. Allow ten days or more to add the oases and a night in the Sahara.
Where were the Star Wars scenes filmed in Tunisia?+
Luke Skywalker's home was filmed in a cave dwelling at Matmata, and the Mos Espa set still stands in the desert near Tozeur. Both fit into a southern route.
Is self-driving in Tunisia straightforward?+
Main roads along the coast and to the south are good, and you drive on the right. Your travel expert plans each day's distance and books the hotels ahead.
Is Tunisia suited to a honeymoon?+
Yes, for couples who like history with their beaches, finishing on Djerba or in Hammamet. A seafood dinner at Sidi Bou Said at sunset is a fine way to mark the trip.
What is a night in the Sahara near Douz like?+
Camps beyond Douz sit among the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental, reached by four wheel drive or camel. Dinner is by the fire, and the stars are bright with no light around.
