Cross Valletta's Grand Harbour by water taxi

The best first view of Malta is from the water. A painted dghajsa, the traditional water taxi, carries you across the Grand Harbour beneath the honey-coloured walls the Knights of St John built after the Great Siege of 1565. Each noon a gun fires at the Saluting Battery above, and the sound rolls across to the Three Cities.

Valletta is a UNESCO-listed city of 16th-century townhouses and wooden balconies, small enough to cross on foot in an afternoon. Inland, the walled hilltop city of Mdina goes quiet after dark. The megalithic temples on Malta and Gozo are older than the pyramids of Egypt, and the coastline below is cut with coves for swimming and wrecks for diving.

Trace Malta's history with a guide

Days your travel expert can plan around Valletta, Mdina and the south coast.

  • Mdina and St Paul's Grotto

Drive inland to Mdina, the walled old capital, where tradition says St Paul stayed after his shipwreck in AD 60. Visit his grotto in Rabat, Palazzo Falson and the Wignacourt Museum.

  • Temples, Blue Grotto and Three Cities

See the underground Hypogeum and the sea-facing temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra. Take a boat into the Blue Grotto, then walk Birgu's lanes to Fort St Angelo.

  • Mdina, Rabat and a wine cellar

Step inside St Paul's Cathedral in Mdina, then stop at a family wine estate for a cellar tasting. In Rabat, see the Domus Romana and the catacombs below the Wignacourt Museum.

Base yourself in Valletta or Sliema

Each area suits a different stay, and Gozo is an easy ferry ride across.

  • Valletta

A walled capital built by the Knights of St John, with St John's Co-Cathedral and the Upper Barrakka Gardens over the harbour.

  • Sliema and the harbour

A seafront promenade facing Valletta across the water, with ferries to the capital and easy access to the whole island.

  • Mdina and Rabat

The quiet walled former capital on a hilltop in the centre of the island, with catacombs in Rabat beside it.

  • Gozo

Malta's greener sister island, with the Citadella in Victoria, the Ġgantija temples and clear water for swimming.

Take the wheel or go by sea

Malta is offered as a self-drive, a private tour, a small group tour or a Mediterranean cruise.

  • Private tours

A private guide for Valletta, Mdina and the Hypogeum, with the Gozo crossing arranged for you.

  • Self-drive holidays

Drive on the left between Mdina, the temples and the Gozo ferry, with each hotel booked ahead.

Swim in Malta well into autumn

The sea stays warm until late October, and spring suits walking best.

  • JanuaryMixed

Mild and quiet, the coolest month with some rain.

  • FebruaryMixed

Carnival in Valletta and few visitors at the sites.

  • MarchGood

Spring begins, green countryside and comfortable walking.

  • AprilBest

Warm days, Easter processions and quiet beaches.

  • MayBest

Sunny and warm, the sea ready for swimming.

  • JuneGood

Long hot days and village feasts begin.

  • JulyMixed

  • AugustMixed

The hottest month, best spent by the sea.

  • SeptemberBest

Warm seas, softer heat and fewer people.

  • OctoberBest

Mild days, ideal for Valletta, Mdina and Gozo.

  • NovemberGood

Cooler with some rain, still pleasant for touring.

  • DecemberMixed

Mild with Christmas cribs and lights across the towns.

Fly into Malta from across Europe

Malta has direct flights from across Europe, and longer routes connect once in the Gulf or a European hub.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 24 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 24 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 25 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 20 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 16 h
  • London (non-stop): about 3 h
  • Dubai (one stop): about 8 h

Hop across to Sicily

Sicily is a short ferry or flight away, and Tunisia lies to the south-west.

Rome, Florence and Venice, with Amalfi, Puglia and Sicily.

  • Tunisia

Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and the oases of the Sahara.

Sort out your Malta plans

Does Malta follow the Schengen rules?+
Yes. Malta is in the Schengen area, so Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders, for example, can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Your first entry records fingerprints and a photo under the EU Entry/Exit System. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Which months suit a Malta trip that mixes swimming and sightseeing?+
June and September give a warm sea with gentler heat for walking Valletta. Spring suits the temples and the Gozo cliff walks best.
How many days do Malta and Gozo need?+
Five days covers Valletta, Mdina and the Three Cities, and two or three more on Gozo slow the pace. A week in total suits most first visits.
Should we stay on Gozo or the main island?+
The main island suits history and restaurants, with Valletta and Sliema the easiest bases. Gozo is quieter and greener, a short ferry from Ċirkewwa, and a few nights there feel like a separate holiday.
Where would you plan a honeymoon dinner in Malta?+
A table on Valletta's bastions, looking across the Grand Harbour to the Three Cities at dusk, is hard to better. Your travel expert can also arrange a private boat to a quiet cove off Gozo or Comino.
Do we need to book the Hypogeum ahead?+
Yes. Entry to the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is limited to small groups each hour and often sells out weeks ahead. Your travel expert books your slot as soon as your dates are set.
Is it easy to drive in Malta?+
Malta drives on the left, as in the UK and Australia, but roads are narrow and busy and parking in the old towns is tight. Many travellers drive on Gozo and use a private driver for Valletta and Mdina.
Is English spoken in Malta?+
Yes. English is an official language alongside Maltese, so signs, menus and museum labels are in English. Plugs are the three-pin British type, so bring an adaptor.
