Ask about datesAfter a night in San Jose, travel by road and boat to the rainforest canals of Tortuguero on the Caribbean side. From there the route turns inland to the Arenal Volcano and climbs to the cloud forest of Monteverde, with a guided outing at each stop and free afternoons in between.

San Jose
Day 1 · San Jose
You are met in the arrivals hall at Juan Santamaria International Airport and taken to your hotel. Rest after the flight, or head out to see a little of the capital, its National Theatre and its older neighbourhoods.
Tortuguero
Day 2 · Tortuguero
A 6.30am pick-up takes you through Braulio Carrillo National Park to the Caribbean plains, with breakfast at Guapiles. A boat then carries you through the rivers and canals of Tortuguero to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon your guide walks you round Tortuguero village and its turtle museum.
Day 3 · Tortuguero
An early walk with your guide through the lodge's trails and gardens, then breakfast and a two-hour boat tour of the canals and lagoons with a naturalist. The afternoon is free.
Arenal
Day 4 · Arenal
Leave Tortuguero by shared boat around 9am, then continue by road to Guapiles for lunch. A transfer takes you on to Arenal, arriving around 5pm, with the evening free.
Day 5 · Arenal
A guided morning walk in the national park, learning the volcano's history and looking out for sloths, howler monkeys and anteaters. You are back at the hotel by 12.30pm with the afternoon free.
Monteverde
Day 6 · Monteverde
Leave at 7.30am and drive from rainforest into cloud forest, climbing to about 1,200 metres. You reach Monteverde around 11.30am, with time to explore Santa Elena's cafes and craft shops.
Day 7 · Monteverde
A guided walk from 7am in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, whose trails run along the continental divide between the Caribbean and Pacific sides. Back by midday, the afternoon is yours.
San Jose
Day 8 · San Jose
After a last breakfast, a transfer takes you back down to Juan Santamaria International Airport for your flight.
