Rincon de la Vieja
Day 1 · Rincon de la Vieja
You are met at Liberia Airport and taken to your lodge near Rincon de la Vieja National Park. Spend the afternoon at the natural hot springs beside the river, where the local habit is to cover yourself in volcanic mud and rinse it off in the water.
Day 2 · Rincon de la Vieja
A free day near the national park, which spans two volcanoes and dozens of rivers and streams. A good way to spend it is on horseback, riding forest trails to the twin Chorreras falls and their blue pool, then on to the 35 metre Victoria waterfall for a swim.
Monteverde
Day 3 · Monteverde
Travel up to the Monteverde cloud forest, with the afternoon free to explore. After dark, a guide leads you into the forest to look for sloths, armadillos, porcupines, coatis, olingos and kinkajous, along with frogs, insects and sleeping birds.
Day 4 · Monteverde
A short drive brings you to 60 hectares of mostly primary forest with four waterfalls of 15 to 30 metres. The three-hour hike crosses rivers and stone paths, and on a clear day a viewpoint shows the Arenal, Rincon de la Vieja, Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes. Snacks by the river and a 35-minute ride, rated intermediate to advanced, finish the outing.
Arenal
Day 5 · Arenal
Travel to La Fortuna by road and boat across Lake Arenal, a scenic shared crossing and the quickest way between the two areas. The afternoon is free to explore or rest at the hotel.
Day 6 · Arenal
A guide takes you across a network of hanging bridges and platforms through the rainforest canopy, with views of the volcano. Then walk the 500 metre trail down to the La Fortuna waterfall, which drops 60 metres into a clear pool where you can swim. Its entry fee goes to community projects in La Fortuna.
Day 7 · Arenal
A 4x4 climbs a mountain road to a ranch, where guides fit your gear and run through safety. You then descend a rainforest canyon by five waterfall rappels of 13 to 55 metres, with a zipline across the canyon on the way. Lunch is served with a view of the volcano, with hot showers and changing rooms on hand.
Liberia or San Jose
Day 8 · Liberia or San Jose
After a last breakfast, a shared transfer takes you to Liberia or Juan Santamaria International Airport for your flight home.
