Salamanca
Day 2 · Salamanca
Drive northwest to Salamanca, home to one of Spain’s oldest universities, whose students still give the city its lively feel. Start at the Plaza Mayor, then walk past the Casa de las Conchas, the Monterrey Palace, the Clavero Tower and the art nouveau and art deco museum at Casa Lis.
Cáceres
Day 3 · Cáceres
Drive south into Extremadura to Cáceres, whose compact walled old town is UNESCO listed and full of fortified houses, Renaissance palaces and churches. Look for the Toledo-Moctezuma Palace and the co-cathedral of Santa María, then the 15th century Cigüeñas Palace near Plaza San Mateo.
Mérida
Day 4 · Mérida
Follow the southern stretch of the Silver Way to Mérida, once a Roman capital, where the bridge and the theatre are still in use. See the amphitheatre beside it and the columns of the Temple of Diana in the old forum before driving back to Cáceres.
Madrid
Day 5 · Madrid
Drive back to Madrid with the afternoon free. Spend it in the city’s golden triangle of art galleries, among some of the most treasured paintings in Europe.
Day 6 · Madrid
Breakfast, then drive to the airport and return the car before your flight.
