Pick the water that suits you

Rivers keep you close to towns and villages, while coastal cruises open up islands and harbours.

  • Rivers through history

River cruises moor in the heart of old towns, so temples, markets and cathedrals are close to the gangway.

  • Islands by sea

Coastal cruises reach islands and small harbours that are slow to visit by land.

  • Calm waters, easy days

Rivers and sheltered coasts mean smooth sailing, quiet decks and relaxed days between the guided visits ashore.

  • Guides at every stop

Local guides lead visits ashore, from the Valley of the Kings to Amazon tributaries.

Explore the best rivers and coasts

Start where river and ocean cruises work best.

  • Egypt

The Nile between Luxor and Aswan is lined with temples and tombs.

  • Peru

Amazon cruises from Iquitos explore the rainforest by skiff and on foot.

  • Croatia

Small ships sail Kvarner and Dalmatia, mooring in old island towns.

  • Germany

The Rhine and the Danube pass castles, vineyards and historic cities.

  • Netherlands

Waterways link Amsterdam with tulip fields and Flemish towns.

  • Ecuador

Galápagos cruises reach islands where wildlife shows little fear of people.

  • China

Yangtze cruises sail through the Three Gorges between Chongqing and Yichang.

Questions travellers ask

What is the difference between a river cruise and an ocean cruise?+
A river cruise sails calm inland waters and docks in town centres, with land in view all day. An ocean or coastal cruise reaches islands and ports along a coastline, with some time at open sea.
Are river cruises good for travellers prone to seasickness?+
Rivers are generally calm, which makes river cruising a comfortable choice. Coastal routes in sheltered waters, such as the Dalmatian islands, are also usually smooth in summer.
When is the best time for a Nile cruise?+
October to April brings warm days and cooler evenings along the Nile. Summer is very hot, especially around Aswan.
Which river cruise is best for a first cruise?+
The Nile and the Rhine are popular first choices, with famous sights close to the river and short, easy excursions. Your travel expert can suggest the right length and season.
Can children join river and ocean cruises?+
Many cruises welcome families, although some set minimum ages. Your travel expert can check the rules for each sailing.
Do we need a visa for a Nile cruise?+
Most visitors need a visa for Egypt, and many can get one online or on arrival, depending on their passport. Entry rules change, so check your own government's travel advice before you travel. Your travel expert confirms the requirements for your passport and dates.
