Walk the Great Wall before the crowds

Your first morning on a quiet section of the Great Wall tells you how this trip will feel. A private guide meets you in Beijing, and the day is timed so you reach the watchtowers while the hills are still misty, then sit down to Peking duck in a courtyard restaurant. Many travellers expect China to be hard work. With the right guides and hotels, it is the opposite.

Shanghai is where most travellers relax into it, with the Bund lit up across the river and long dinners that run late. Xi'an and its Terracotta Army are an easy high-speed train journey from Beijing, and Chengdu adds giant pandas and the heat of Sichuan cooking. On the Yangtze, a river cruise through the Three Gorges lets you unpack once and watch the cliffs pass.

Go deeper into China's great sights

Guided days that show the great sights at their quietest, with the everyday life around them.

  • The Great Wall, away from crowds

Climb a quieter section of the Great Wall with your guide and follow it along the ridgeline, with time to take in the views without the tour groups.

  • Beijing's hutongs by pedicab

Ride a pedicab through the lanes of old Beijing, where courtyard homes, small shops and neighbourhood life carry on much as they have for generations.

  • Meet the Terracotta Army

Walk among the clay warriors of the first emperor of China, each face different, and hear how farmers stumbled on them while digging a well in 1974.

  • Giant pandas in Chengdu

Visit the Chengdu panda breeding centre with a guide in the morning, when the pandas are most active, and learn how the species was brought back from the brink.

  • Yangshuo by bike and bamboo raft

Cycle through old farming villages among the karst peaks, then drift down the river on a bamboo raft as the hills slide by.

  • The Potala Palace in Lhasa

Climb into the Potala Palace, winter home of the Dalai Lamas since the 17th century, and see the chapels, murals and golden tombs inside.

  • A calm cruise on the Yangtze

Sail the Yangtze through its gorges over four days, with morning tai chi on deck, talks on Chinese medicine and shore visits along the way.

  • Shanghai's art studios

Spend an afternoon among the galleries and working studios of M50, where artists have turned old riverside warehouses into Shanghai's creative heart.

Choose your Chinese cities and rivers

Beijing and Xi'an suit a first visit, and Chengdu or the Yangtze make a fine second week.

  • Beijing

The Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and quiet sections of the Great Wall, with old hutong lanes to explore in between.

  • Xi'an

The Terracotta Army, the old city walls you can cycle along the top of, and the Muslim Quarter's food stalls at dusk.

  • Shanghai

The Bund's colonial waterfront facing the Pudong skyline, with classical gardens and canal towns such as Zhujiajiao a short drive away.

  • Pingyao and Shanxi

One of China's best kept walled towns, with Ming and Qing era courtyard houses, plus the Yungang Grottoes near Datong.

  • Chengdu

Sichuan's capital, home to the giant panda breeding centre, teahouses in the parks and some of China's most fiery cooking.

  • The Yangtze River

  • City breaks

A few nights in Shanghai or Beijing, with a private guide for the old lanes and the sights.

  • Cruises

Yangtze voyages through the Three Gorges, with a balcony cabin chosen for you.

Avoid China's peak holiday weeks

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, and national holidays are worth steering around.

  • JanuaryMixed

Cold and dry in Beijing and Xi'an, with quiet sights and Chinese New Year in some years.

  • FebruaryMixed

Still cold in the north, and Chinese New Year travel fills the trains, so book well ahead.

  • MarchGood

Spring arrives, with blossom in Shanghai and mild days in Xi'an and Chengdu.

  • AprilBest

Mild and clear across Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai, a fine month for the Great Wall.

  • MayBest

Warm, green and mostly dry, but avoid the May Day holiday week at the start of the month.

  • JuneMixed

Heat builds, and the plum rains begin around Shanghai and the Yangtze.

  • JulyMixed

Hot and humid with summer rain, though the Yangtze runs high for cruising.

  • AugustMixed

Still hot and wet in the east and south, with Beijing's summer at its peak.

  • SeptemberBest

Heat eases and skies clear, one of the best months for the whole route.

  • OctoberBest

Crisp autumn days on the Great Wall, avoid the national holiday in the first week.

  • NovemberGood

Cool and dry in the north, still mild in Shanghai, Chengdu and on the Yangtze.

  • DecemberMixed

Cold in Beijing and Xi'an but quiet, with clear winter light on the Great Wall.

Fly direct to Shanghai or Beijing

Beijing and Shanghai have direct flights from Europe, the Gulf, North America and Australia, so many travellers arrive without a connection.

  • Sydney (non-stop): about 11 h
  • Melbourne (non-stop): about 11.5 h
  • Brisbane (non-stop): about 9 h
  • Perth (non-stop): about 8 h
  • Los Angeles (non-stop): about 13 h
  • London (non-stop): about 11 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 8 h

Combine China with Hong Kong

The high-speed train reaches Hong Kong from Guangzhou in under an hour, which makes it a natural last stop.

  • Hong Kong

Harbour views, dim sum and island hikes in one city.

  • Mongolia

Open steppe, nomad camps and the Gobi under huge skies.

  • Japan

Kyoto's gardens, Tokyo's energy and journeys by bullet train.

Clear up visas and logistics for China

Can I visit China without a visa?+
For many passports, yes. China's visa waiver covers a growing list of countries, and ordinary Australian passport holders, for example, can stay up to 30 days for tourism under a waiver that currently runs until 31 December 2026. Other passports may still need a visa. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Which holiday weeks should we avoid in China?+
Steer around Golden Week in the first week of October and the Lunar New Year holiday, when much of the country travels and trains and sites fill. Your travel expert checks your dates against the holiday calendar before anything is booked.
How long does a first trip to China take?+
Twelve to 14 days covers Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai by fast train, with time for the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors. Add four nights for a Yangtze cruise or Guilin's karst hills.
How do we pay for things in China?+
Most of China pays by phone through Alipay and WeChat Pay, and both now accept foreign cards for visitors. Your guide helps you set them up on day one, and some cash covers the rest.
Is the bullet train better than flying between Beijing and Shanghai?+
Usually, yes. The fastest trains cover the route in about four and a half hours, city centre to city centre, and your travel expert books business class seats in advance.
Can we celebrate an anniversary on the Great Wall?+
Yes. Your travel expert can arrange a private walk on a quieter section such as Mutianyu or Jinshanling, then dinner in a Beijing courtyard. Tell us the occasion and we plan the details.
Can we use Google and WhatsApp in China?+
Google, WhatsApp and many Western apps are blocked in mainland China. Download offline maps and translation tools before you fly, and your guide stays in touch through local apps.
