See the Netherlands at canal level

Travellers are often surprised by how compact and easy the Netherlands is. Amsterdam's canal houses, the flower fields and old towns like Delft and Haarlem sit close together, so a barge or river ship can carry you between them while you unpack only once.

In Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum holds Rembrandt's Night Watch and the Van Gogh Museum sits across the square. Keukenhof's gardens open for about eight weeks each spring, and windmills still turn at Kinderdijk and Zaanse Schans. Delft is known for its blue and white pottery, and Rotterdam's modern architecture makes a sharp contrast with the old towns.

Explore Amsterdam and the Dutch countryside

Art, food and easy cycling, arranged around your days.

  • Dinner in Rembrandt's house

Explore the home where Rembrandt lived and worked, with his etchings and studio, then sit down to dinner in the museum.

  • Delft and The Hague

See Delft's canals and hand-painted blue and white pottery, then visit The Hague and the Dutch masters of the Mauritshuis.

  • Taste the Jordaan

Walk the canals and lanes of the Jordaan with a guide, stopping at specialty shops and local favourites to eat.

  • The countryside by bike

Cycle through the old harbour, take the ferry north and ride out into flat farmland, dikes and small villages.

Look beyond Amsterdam's canal ring

Delft and Haarlem suit a quieter day, while Rotterdam suits modern design.

  • Amsterdam and Zaandam

The canal ring, the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh, with the green wooden houses and windmills of the Zaanse Schans close by.

  • Delft and Leiden

Delft's blue pottery and market square, and Leiden's university canals, both small towns best explored on foot.

  • Haarlem and the bulb fields

A golden-age town with a great market church, close to the tulip fields that flower from late March to early May.

Ask about Dutch barges and tulip timing

What do I need to visit Amsterdam and the Dutch canals?+
It depends on your passport. Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders, for example, can visit the Netherlands visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. The EU's Entry/Exit System takes your fingerprints and photo when you first arrive, and ETIAS has not started yet. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
When are the tulips in bloom?+
Tulips usually peak in mid to late April, with the fields around Lisse at their brightest. Weather moves the bloom by a week or two each year, so we choose cruise dates in the heart of the season.
What is the difference between a Dutch barge and a river cruise?+
A barge carries a small group of guests along narrow canals, often with bikes on board for rides between villages. A river ship is larger and travels the Rhine and Maas, often continuing into Belgium or Germany.
How long should we spend in Amsterdam before a cruise?+
Two or three nights covers the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and an evening on the canals at an easy pace. Book the Anne Frank House well ahead, as tickets sell out weeks in advance.
Can we celebrate an anniversary on a Dutch barge?+
Yes. A small barge can be chartered for your party alone, with the chef planning a celebration dinner on deck. In Amsterdam, a private evening canal cruise with Champagne makes a fine first night.
Is cycling part of a Dutch barge holiday?+
Often, yes. Bikes travel on board, and flat, quiet cycle paths link the moorings, so you can ride between villages and meet the barge for lunch. You can always stay aboard instead.
Which Dutch towns are worth a day beyond Amsterdam?+
Utrecht has canals with cellar cafés at water level, and Leiden has Rembrandt's birthplace and the oldest university in the country. Gouda still holds its cheese market on summer Thursdays.
