Take to Croatia's Adriatic by boat

Croatia gives you the European summer many travellers want, with clear water, stone harbour towns and dinner outdoors every night. The pleasure is in the movement between places, stepping off a boat in a new port each day and swimming wherever the water looks good.

Dubrovnik's old town is ringed by walls you can walk at sunset, and Split grew up inside the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian. Hvar has lavender and a lively harbour, Korčula has a medieval old town, and Ston is known for its oysters and long defensive walls. Inland, the lakes and waterfalls of Plitvice are worth a day, and Istria in the north has truffles and hilltop towns.

Visit the Konavle Valley near Dubrovnik to see silk made from cocoon to embroidery, then taste local wine with cured meats.

  • A food walk in Samobor

Spend a morning in Samobor near Zagreb tasting its famous kremšnita custard slice and other local specialities.

Choose your Croatian harbour towns

Dubrovnik suits history lovers, and Hvar suits those who want a livelier harbour.

  • Split and Trogir

A Roman emperor's palace that became a living old town, with the medieval island town of Trogir a short drive away.

City walls above the Adriatic, marble streets inside them and the oyster beds and long walls of Ston up the coast.

  • Hvar and Brač

Lavender, vineyards and Hvar's harbour town, with the famous Zlatni Rat beach at Bol on Brač across the channel.

  • The Kvarner Gulf

Rijeka's port and the islands of Krk and Rab in the north, quieter than Dalmatia, with Zadar further down the coast.

Pick your boat or your guide

Croatia works well as a private tour or a small group trip, with island cruises and city breaks in Dubrovnik or Split.

  • Private tours

  • Small group tours

Travel Split, the islands and Dubrovnik with a small group and a guide who knows each harbour.

Find out how Croatian island hopping works

Is Croatia in the Schengen area?+
Yes. Croatia joined the Schengen area in 2023 and uses the euro. Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries. The EU's Entry/Exit System takes your fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border, and ETIAS has not started yet. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
Is a small-ship cruise or a land trip better for the Croatian islands?+
A small ship moves you between Hvar, Korčula, Mljet and Vis while you swim and eat, and you unpack once. A land trip with ferries suits travellers who want more nights in Dubrovnik or Split and a larger hotel suite.
When is the best month to sail in Croatia?+
June and September give a warm sea, long days and calmer old towns than July and August. Most small ships and island hotels operate from May to October.
How many days do you need for Dubrovnik and Split?+
Allow two or three nights in each, as both old towns are best seen early and late in the day. A week on the islands between them makes a well-paced ten-day trip.
Can we charter a private yacht for a honeymoon in Croatia?+
Yes. A crewed gulet or motor yacht can be yours alone for a week, anchoring in quiet coves around the Pakleni Islands and Mljet. Your travel expert arranges the skipper, the chef and a final night in a sea-view suite in Dubrovnik.
Is Plitvice worth the trip inland?+
Plitvice Lakes National Park has turquoise lakes linked by waterfalls and wooden boardwalks, and it suits a full day. It sits about two hours from Zadar, so we usually place it at the start of a northern route.
Where are the best beaches in Croatia?+
Croatian beaches are mostly pebble, with very clear water. Zlatni Rat on Brač, the coves of Vis and Lopud's sandy Šunj beach near Dubrovnik are among the favourites, and swim shoes help on the rocks.
