Enjoy Germany's sense of occasion

Travellers often expect efficiency in Germany and find warmth as well, in a beer garden under chestnut trees, a Christmas market with mulled wine in hand or a concert hall where the whole city seems to turn up. The country is easy to get around, which leaves you free to enjoy yourself.

Munich is the gateway to Bavaria, with Neuschwanstein against the Alps and lakes for summer swimming. Passau sits where three rivers meet and is the start of many Danube cruises. Berlin has some of Europe's great museums and a history still visible on its streets, and Dresden's Baroque old town has been rebuilt along the Elbe. The Rhine and Moselle valleys bring vineyards and castles above the water.

Experience Germany's culture and craft

Guided moments in the cities and the countryside, arranged around your days.

  • Berlin's essential history

See Potsdamer Platz, once split by the Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate on a half-day tour of the city's key sites.

  • Inside the Berlin Philharmonie

Tour the stages and stalls of one of the world's great concert halls, and learn how its mid-century design shapes the sound.

  • Baroque Dresden

Walk the cobbled streets by the Elbe to the Zwinger, the Frauenkirche and the Semper Opera House.

  • Chocolate in a Saxon castle

Make organic chocolates in the cellar of Thürmsdorf Castle, near Dresden, with a chocolatier to guide you.

  • Munich beyond Oktoberfest

Stroll the old town from Marienplatz and its glockenspiel to the Viktualienmarkt, the churches and the royal Residenz.

  • Munich's street art

Meet local artists in their studios, then explore the colourful corners of the city where murals cover whole walls.

  • Drive a Porsche in Leipzig

Tour the Porsche factory, then take the wheel of a sports car on the on-site circuit with an instructor beside you.

Choose your German region

Bavaria suits castles and mountains, while Berlin suits museums and modern history.

  • Munich

The Marienplatz and its glockenspiel, royal palaces, art galleries and beer gardens in the English Garden.

  • Passau and the Danube

A baroque city where three rivers meet, the starting point for cruises downstream to Austria.

  • The Bavarian Alps

Lakes, alpine meadows and painted villages near Bad Tölz, with King Ludwig's castles in the foothills.

Plan Germany for summer or Christmas

Christmas market sailings sell out first, so we hold cabins early.

  • JanuaryAvoid

Cold and dark, rivers out of season.

  • FebruaryAvoid

Winter in Bavaria, good for skiing, quiet in the cities.

  • MarchMixed

Cool and changeable, the first cruises begin late in the month.

  • AprilGood

Spring along the Danube and blossom in the valleys.

  • MayBest

Green hills, warm days and beer gardens opening.

  • JuneBest

Long days, ideal for the Alps and the river.

  • JulyGood

Warm and busy, lakes in the Alps at their best.

  • AugustGood

Summer heat in the cities, cooler in the mountains.

  • SeptemberBest

Calm weather on the river and Oktoberfest begins in Munich.

  • OctoberGood

Autumn colour along the Danube and in the Alps.

  • NovemberMixed

Grey and cool, Christmas markets open late in the month.

  • DecemberGood

Christmas markets in Munich and along the Danube.

Choose Munich or Frankfurt for arrival

Both connect well with Asia and the Gulf, and Munich is closest to the Danube.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 23 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 23 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 24 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 20 h
  • Los Angeles (non-stop): about 11.5 h
  • London (non-stop): about 2 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 6.5 h

Follow the rivers over Germany's borders

The Danube flows on into Austria and the Rhine into the Netherlands, while Switzerland is a train ride south.

  • Austria

Vienna and the vineyards of the Wachau on the Danube.

  • Switzerland

Lucerne, the Jungfrau and Lake Geneva by train.

  • Netherlands

Tulip season cruises from Amsterdam to Delft and Haarlem.

Ask about German rivers and markets

What do the EU's new border checks mean for visitors to Germany?+
Visitors from outside the EU, including Australian, UK, US and Canadian passport holders, still enter Germany visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. The Entry/Exit System now takes your fingerprints and photo at your first Schengen border, and the ETIAS travel authorisation has not started yet. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
When is the best time for a Danube cruise or the Christmas markets?+
Most Christmas markets open in late November and run until just before Christmas, with Nuremberg and Dresden among the best known. Summer sailings suit travellers who want the river towns and beer gardens at their liveliest.
Where does a Danube cruise start in Germany?+
Many Danube cruises start or finish at Passau, where three rivers meet, or near Nuremberg on the Main-Danube Canal. We add nights in Munich or Nuremberg before you board, with a transfer to the ship.
How long is a Danube river cruise?+
Most Danube cruises run seven to ten nights between Passau or Nuremberg and Budapest. Add two or three nights in Munich before you board, and a couple in Vienna or Budapest at the end.
Can we celebrate a milestone birthday on a river cruise?+
Yes. We book a suite with a balcony, arrange a cake and Champagne with the crew, and add a private tour ashore. For an anniversary, a night at a castle hotel on the Rhine makes a fine finish.
Is Neuschwanstein worth a day trip from Munich?+
Yes, with timed tickets booked ahead, as the castle sells out in summer. It is about two hours from Munich by car, and a private driver lets you add Linderhof Palace on the way.
Do I need cash in Germany?+
Cards are widely accepted in hotels and restaurants, but some cafés, beer gardens and market stalls still prefer cash. Carry some euros for Christmas markets and small purchases.
