Cairo → Giza → Luxor → Valley of the Kings → Edfu → Kom Ombo → Aswan → Abu Simbel

This private journey opens in Cairo with the Grand Egyptian Museum and a walk inside a pyramid at Giza. You then fly to Luxor and cruise the Nile for four nights, visiting the Valleys of the Kings and Queens, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae. A flight to Abu Simbel and a final day at Sakkara bring you back to Cairo.

Sail the Nile past Egypt's temples

Standing at the foot of the Great Pyramid, you feel how short a lifetime is. Giza's pyramid is the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing, and the Grand Egyptian Museum beside it now holds Tutankhamun's treasures. Cairo itself is layered with Islamic, Ottoman and European streets, and an early start at the plateau keeps the crowds behind you.

Upriver, a Nile cruise turns sightseeing into something calm. You sail between Luxor and Aswan on a small ship or a sailing dahabiya, stopping at Edfu and Kom Ombo, with the Valley of the Kings across the river at Luxor. Aswan carries Nubian culture, and the great temples of Abu Simbel sit further south near the Sudan border.

Add these days to Egypt

The sights that shape a first trip to Egypt, each one paced by your travel expert.

  • Tour the Grand Egyptian Museum

See Tutankhamun's treasures together for the first time, along with the great statue of Ramesses II, in the vast new museum beside the Pyramids.

  • Stand before the Pyramids

Walk around the tombs of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, built more than 4,500 years ago, and finish at the Sphinx.

  • Visit the temples of Abu Simbel

Hear how the twin temples of Ramesses II were moved block by block in the 1960s to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.

  • Balloon over Luxor at sunrise

Float over the West Bank at dawn and look down on Hatshepsut's temple, the Colossi of Memnon and the green Nile valley.

Follow the Nile between Cairo and Aswan

Most trips start in Cairo and fly south to Luxor or Aswan to join the river.

  • Cairo and Giza

The Pyramids and the Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum's treasures and the old lanes of Islamic Cairo.

  • Luxor and the west bank

Karnak and Luxor temples on the east bank, royal tombs and Hatshepsut's temple on the west.

  • Edfu and Kom Ombo

Two riverside temples on the cruise south, Edfu among the best preserved in Egypt and Kom Ombo shared by two gods.

  • Aswan and Philae

Granite islands, feluccas on the river and the Temple of Philae, moved to Agilika Island.

  • Abu Simbel

Ramses II's great rock-cut temples beside Lake Nasser, reached by road or a short flight from Aswan.

Travel Egypt in the cooler months

The cooler months are kindest for temple visits, and summer heat makes early starts essential in the south.

  • JanuaryBest

Warm, sunny days and cool nights, ideal for the Nile.

  • FebruaryBest

Mild weather, with the Abu Simbel sun festival on 22 February.

  • MarchBest

Warm and clear across the country before the heat.

  • AprilGood

Hot afternoons in the south, occasional dusty winds.

  • MayMixed

Heat builds in Luxor and Aswan, start sightseeing early.

  • JuneAvoid

Very hot in the south, best for Cairo only.

  • JulyAvoid

Extreme heat in Upper Egypt, Nile touring is tiring.

  • AugustAvoid

The hottest month, temples are best at first light.

  • SeptemberMixed

Still hot, cruises quieter as the heat eases.

  • OctoberGood

Warm days return, with the Abu Simbel sun festival on 22 October.

  • NovemberBest

Pleasant across Egypt, the start of the main Nile season.

  • DecemberBest

Mild, sunny days, festive dates book out early.

Fly into Cairo, then on to Luxor

Cairo has direct flights from Europe and the Gulf, and domestic flights carry you on to Luxor and Aswan.

  • Sydney (one stop): about 20 h
  • Melbourne (one stop): about 20 h
  • Brisbane (one stop): about 21 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 16 h
  • Los Angeles (one stop): about 18 h
  • London (non-stop): about 5 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 3.5 h

Add Petra across the Red Sea

Jordan is about an hour by air, and Petra makes a natural second chapter.

  • Jordan

Petra's Treasury, Wadi Rum's desert and the Dead Sea.

  • Saudi Arabia

AlUla's sandstone canyons and the tombs of Hegra.

Find out what Egypt travellers ask

What entry paperwork does Egypt ask for?+
It depends on your passport. Australian passport holders, for example, may need an online eVisa, and a tourist visa on arrival must be paid with a non-Egyptian credit card or US dollars in cash. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Should we cruise the Nile by dahabiya or ship?+
A dahabiya is a sailing boat with a handful of cabins that moors at quieter spots, while larger river ships carry more guests and have pools. Most cruises sail between Luxor and Aswan over three to five nights.
How hot is Egypt, and when should we go?+
October to April is the most comfortable, with warm days and cool nights. Summer in Luxor and Aswan often passes 40°C, so visits start at dawn.
Is ten days enough for Egypt?+
Ten days covers Cairo and Giza, a four night Nile cruise and a day at Abu Simbel. Add Alexandria or the Red Sea if you have two weeks.
Is the Grand Egyptian Museum open?+
Yes. The museum beside the Giza pyramids holds the full Tutankhamun collection. Allow at least half a day.
Can we visit Abu Simbel from Aswan?+
Yes, by road in about three and a half hours each way or by a short flight. The temples face the sunrise, so most visits start before dawn.
Can we plan a birthday dinner facing the Pyramids?+
Yes. Several Giza hotels and restaurants look onto the Pyramids, and your travel expert can book a private terrace table. A felucca sail at sunset in Aswan is another favourite.
What should we wear at Egypt's temples and mosques?+
Light clothes covering shoulders and knees suit the temples and are needed in mosques, where women also cover their hair. A hat and good walking shoes help at the sites.
