Day 1 · Heraklion
Collect your car at Heraklion airport and drive the short way to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours.
Day 2 · Heraklion
Walk through Heraklion to its archaeological museum, one of the most important in Greece. Then drive out to the Palace of Knossos, the heart of Minoan Crete some 5,000 years ago.
Chania
Day 3 · Chania
Drive west to Chania, a town made for walking. Start at the old Venetian boatyards on the eastern edge of the harbour, choose a dockside taverna for later, and walk out to the lighthouse before dark for the view back over the town.
Day 4 · Chania
An early drive southwest to Elafonissi, an islet you reach by wading through shallow water. Sand bars, a lagoon of pale turquoise and fine white sand, tinted pink in places by crushed shells, give it an almost tropical look.
Rethymno
Day 5 · Rethymno
A short drive to Rethymno, one of the best-kept medieval towns in Greece. Spend the day in its old town and around the harbour, among Venetian mansions, churches and mosques.
Agios Nikolaos
Day 6 · Agios Nikolaos
Drive east to Agios Nikolaos, with the curving sand of Voulisma beach ten minutes down the coast. From the fishing village of Elounda, small boats cross to Spinalonga, a Venetian fortress that was later a leper colony until 1957.
Day 7 · Agios Nikolaos
Head east to Sitia, a calm port town on a curving bay, and the 15th-century Toplou Monastery nearby. Continue to Vai, where the island's largest forest of native Cretan palms runs down to the beach.

Day 8 · Heraklion
A last breakfast, then the drive back to Heraklion airport to return your car.

You spend two nights in Athens with a choice of the Acropolis, the Plaka or the Peloponnese before boarding at Piraeus. The ship calls at volcanic Milos, Kalamata and Corfu, then sails up the Adriatic to Kotor in Montenegro and Dubrovnik. After a day at sea you arrive in Venice.
