San José
Day 1 · San José
You are met at the airport and taken privately to your hotel in the capital for the night.
Tortuguero
Day 2 · Tortuguero
Leave early through Braulio Carrillo National Park to the Caribbean plains, with breakfast on the way, then continue by boat through the canals to your lodge. After lunch, take the boat to Tortuguero village to walk through town and along the beach, looking out for hatchlings in season.
Day 3 · Tortuguero
A three-hour guided boat trip through the park's canals, looking for birds, monkeys, crocodiles and sloths. The rest of the day is free by the pool.
Arenal
Day 4 · Arenal
Return by boat to Guápiles for lunch, then continue by shared transfer to the Arenal area. The rest of the day is yours, or you can spend the evening in volcano-heated hot springs.
Day 5 · Arenal
A guide leads you through the national park, explaining the volcano's active years while you look for sloths, howler monkeys and anteaters. The afternoon is free.
Monteverde
Day 6 · Monteverde
Cross Lake Arenal by boat, then drive up through the change from rainforest to cloud forest at about 1,200 metres. Monteverde is a place of mist, coffee farms and the small town of Santa Elena with its restaurants and craft shops. The rest of the day is free.
Day 7 · Monteverde
A guided hike through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, a private reserve founded in 1972 and known for its biodiversity and conservation work. The afternoon is yours.
Tamarindo
Day 8 · Tamarindo
Drive to Tamarindo, a lively beach town in Guanacaste. Spend the afternoon wandering its streets or relaxing at the hotel.
Day 9 · Tamarindo
A free day for the sun and the beach, or a first surf lesson on Tamarindo's well-known waves.
Day 10 · Tamarindo
Another unplanned day: swim, walk the beach, meet the locals in town and choose from its many local and international restaurants in the evening.
Day 11 · Tamarindo
Explore Tamarindo and the beaches nearby on your own, or join an excursion booked on the spot.
San José
Day 12 · San José
Transfer back to the capital and check in for your last night. The afternoon is free, or join a guided city tour taking in the National Theatre, completed in 1897, the Gold Museum, the Central Market and the Metropolitan Cathedral.
Day 13 · San José
If your flight allows, spend the morning at a coffee farm in Barva de Heredia following the bean from nursery to roasting and tasting. Then transfer privately to Juan Santamaría International Airport.
