Tamarindo
Day 1 · Tamarindo
You are met at Liberia's international airport in the northwest of the country and driven to Tamarindo, a lively beach town with good restaurants and surf, for your first night.
Samara
Day 2 · Samara
A shared transfer takes you south to Samara, a relaxed village on a half-moon bay with a long, palm-shaded beach. The rest of the day is yours.
Day 3 · Samara
Head out by boat along the coast to snorkel and look for marine life such as dolphins, whales and sea turtles. Back on shore, the afternoon is free for the beach or the hotel.
Tambor
Day 4 · Tambor
Transfer to Tambor, a sleepy fishing village on Bahía Ballena, a wide and calm horseshoe-shaped bay. Spend the rest of the day on the beach or exploring at your own pace.
Day 5 · Tambor
A day with nothing planned: rest at the hotel, walk the long beach, or try one of the activities offered around the bay.
San José
Day 6 · San José
A shared transfer and the ferry bring you to the capital by early afternoon. Spend the rest of the day wandering the city's streets, landmarks and cafes on your own.
Tortuguero
Day 7 · Tortuguero
Leave at about 6 am through Braulio Carrillo National Park to the Caribbean plains, stopping for breakfast on the way, then continue by boat along the rivers and canals to your lodge. After lunch, take the boat to Tortuguero village to walk through town and along the beach, looking out for hatchlings in season.
Day 8 · Tortuguero
A three-hour guided boat trip through the park's canals, home to hundreds of bird species as well as monkeys, crocodiles and sloths. The rest of the day is free to relax by the pool.
Sarapiquí
Day 9 · Sarapiquí
Return by boat and road to Guápiles for lunch, then continue to Sarapiquí, in the foothills of Braulio Carrillo National Park, for two nights in a rainforest lodge beside mountain streams.
Day 10 · Sarapiquí
A guided safari float on the Sarapiquí River shows you the plants and wildlife of the riverbank rainforest. The afternoon is free, with optional rafting, a chocolate tour through an old cacao plot, or a zip line canopy tour.
Arenal
Day 11 · Arenal
Drive west to Arenal, home to one of Costa Rica's best-known volcanoes. The afternoon is yours to explore or to join an optional outing.
Day 12 · Arenal
A guided walk in the national park, with the volcano as a backdrop, explains its active years and looks out for sloths, howler monkeys and anteaters. Spend the afternoon resting or on the optional outing you skipped yesterday.
Monteverde
Day 13 · Monteverde
Skirt Lake Arenal by boat and road to Monteverde, a highland area of cloud forest, coffee farms and the small town of Santa Elena with its cafes and craft shops. The rest of the day is free.
Day 14 · Monteverde
Hike through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, a private reserve known worldwide for its biodiversity and conservation work. The afternoon is free.
Liberia
Day 15 · Liberia
After breakfast, a private transfer takes you to Liberia's airport for your flight home.
