Japan

Kyushu by luxury train, then Kyoto

10 days · 9 nights

Fukuoka → Aso → Unzen → Kokura → Kitsuki → Hiroshima → Kyoto

You start in Fukuoka with the canals of Yanagawa, then board a luxury train for four days through Kyushu, stopping at Mount Aso and spending a night at a hot spring ryokan in Unzen. The bullet train takes you to Hiroshima and Miyajima, and you finish in Kyoto with temples, a tea ceremony and a geiko dinner.

Ease into Japan at a mountain onsen

There is a moment on a first trip to Japan when everything settles, often in a hot spring bath at a Hakone ryokan with Mount Fuji in the distance. Kaiseki dinner arrives course by course, a futon is laid out while you eat, and the morning starts with green tea.

Kyoto is the heart of a first visit, with temple gardens, tea houses and the lanes of Gion at dusk. Tokyo is the contrast, a huge, orderly city of small bars, fine sushi counters and neighbourhoods that each feel like a separate town. The bullet train links the two in a little over two hours, and Osaka, Nara and Kanazawa are easy additions.

Meet the makers of Japan

Spend time with craftspeople who keep old skills alive, such as sword making in Tokyo and sake brewing in Kyoto.

  • Dinner with a geiko in Kyoto

Spend a private evening in Kyoto with a geiko, sharing a traditional meal while she performs dance and music and talks about her art.

  • Sake heritage in Fushimi

Visit Kyoto's oldest breweries in Fushimi with a sake master, tasting as you learn how the craft has been refined over centuries.

  • Meet a master swordsmith

Step into Tokyo's last traditional sword workshop and watch the master at work, learning how a blade takes three months to make.

  • Shinjuku after dark

Follow a local guide through Shinjuku's lights and lanes at night, into tiny bars and eateries most visitors walk straight past.

  • Tokyo's pop culture

Explore the shops, cafes and museums behind Japan's famous animated characters and cartoon icons, with a guide who knows the scene.

  • Food and craft in Takayama

Discover the food, morning markets and woodcraft of Takayama, a beautifully kept old town high in the Hida mountains.

Divide your nights between Tokyo and Kyoto

Most first visits split the two cities, and Kyushu suits a second trip.

  • Tokyo and Hakone

Tokyo's shrines, gardens and neighbourhoods, then the lakes and hot springs of Hakone, with Mount Fuji in view on clear days.

  • Kyoto, Nara and Osaka

Kyoto's temples and geisha district, Nara's great bronze Buddha and deer park, and the food streets of Osaka, all close together.

  • Kyushu

Japan's southern island, with the volcanic Aso caldera, the hot spring town of Unzen and the food of Fukuoka.

Catch Japan's blossom or autumn leaves

Spring and autumn book out early, so it pays to settle your dates well ahead.

  • JanuaryMixed

Cold and clear, with quiet temples in Kyoto and winter light on Mount Fuji.

  • FebruaryMixed

Still cold, with plum blossom late in the month in Tokyo and Kyoto.

  • MarchGood

Cherry blossom often opens in Tokyo and Kyoto in the last week of March.

  • AprilBest

Peak cherry blossom early in the month, then fresh spring days, so book early.

  • MayGood

Mild and green, but avoid the Golden Week holidays at the start of the month.

  • JuneMixed

The rainy season settles over Honshu and Kyushu, with irises and hydrangeas.

  • JulyMixed

Hot and humid after the rains, with Kyoto's Gion Matsuri festival all month.

  • AugustMixed

Hot, humid and busy with summer festivals and the Obon holidays.

  • SeptemberMixed

Still warm, with typhoons possible, especially in Kyushu.

  • OctoberGood

Clear, mild autumn days, with early leaf colour in the mountains.

  • NovemberBest

Autumn colour peaks in Kyoto, Hakone and Tokyo's gardens.

  • DecemberGood

Cool and dry, with winter lights and the last autumn leaves early in the month.

Fly direct to Tokyo or Osaka

Tokyo has direct flights from Europe, North America, the Gulf and Australia, and fast trains link the main regions.

  • Sydney (non-stop): about 10 h
  • Melbourne (non-stop): about 10.5 h
  • Brisbane (non-stop): about 9 h
  • Perth (one stop): about 12 h
  • Los Angeles (non-stop): about 12 h
  • London (non-stop): about 14 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 10 h

Add Seoul to your Japan trip

Seoul is about two hours' flight from Tokyo, and the two cities make a lively contrast.

  • South Korea

Seoul's palaces, mountain temples and the food of the markets.

  • China

The Great Wall, the Terracotta Army and Shanghai's skyline.

Learn the Japan etiquette basics

Is Japan visa-free for tourists?+
For many passports, yes. Australian, UK, US and most EU passport holders can visit Japan without a visa for short tourist stays, and Australians, for example, can stay under 90 days. You can pre-register immigration and customs details on Visit Japan Web to speed up arrival. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
Is winter a good time to visit Japan?+
Yes, for powder snow in Hokkaido, hot springs in the Alps and quieter temples in Kyoto. Sapporo's snow festival runs each February, and your travel expert books ski lodges well ahead.
How many days do Tokyo, Kyoto and Hakone need?+
Ten to 12 days covers Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto at a comfortable pace, with a day trip to Nara. Add three or four nights for Kanazawa, Hiroshima or a ryokan in the Japanese Alps.
Is a Japan Rail Pass still worth buying?+
Since the 2023 price rise, the pass pays off mainly on longer routes such as Tokyo to Hiroshima and back. Your travel expert prices your route both ways and books reserved seats on the side that faces Mount Fuji.
What should we know before staying in a ryokan?+
Shoes come off at the entrance, you wear the yukata provided, and you wash before entering the shared bath. Dinner is usually a kaiseki meal served at a set time, so tell your travel expert about dietary needs ahead.
Where in Japan suits a honeymoon or anniversary?+
A ryokan with a private open-air bath in Hakone or the Alps suits couples best, followed by a few nights in Kyoto. Tell us the occasion, and your travel expert can arrange a private tea ceremony or a kaiseki dinner in Gion.
Do people tip in Japan?+
No. Tipping is not part of Japanese custom and can cause confusion, as good service is expected. Your guide's fee is settled in advance, so there is nothing to work out on the day.
