Stay above the harbour in Hong Kong

Open the curtains in Hong Kong and the harbour is right there, ferries crossing below and the towers of Kowloon catching the morning light. Non-stop flights arrive from Europe, the Gulf, North America and Australia, and the city is polished enough for a milestone. Most guests start with dim sum, then spend the afternoon with a tailor or in the galleries and antique shops of Hollywood Road.

Then the city surprises you. Trails along the island's green ridges begin minutes from the towers, and on Lantau the Big Buddha sits above a monastery reached by cable car. The Star Ferry still crosses to Kowloon in a few minutes, and the view from the Peak after dark is worth one late night. Hong Kong also makes an easy first or last stop on a longer trip through Asia.

Split your time across the harbour

Hong Kong Island and Kowloon each deserve a day, and Lantau is worth a third.

  • Hong Kong Island

Central's towers, the tram up to Victoria Peak and the old streets of Sheung Wan, with beaches on the south side.

  • Kowloon

Markets, temples and dim sum on the mainland side, with the best view of the island skyline from the harbour promenade.

  • Lantau Island

A cable car ride to the Big Buddha at Ngong Ping, the stilt houses of Tai O fishing village and green hiking trails.

Come to Hong Kong in the drier months

Autumn and early winter bring clear skies and the most comfortable walking weather.

  • JanuaryGood

  • JuneMixed

Heavy rain and high humidity, with typhoons possible.

  • JulyMixed

Hot and wet, the height of the typhoon season.

  • Sydney (non-stop): about 9.5 h
  • Melbourne (non-stop): about 9.5 h
  • Brisbane (non-stop): about 8.5 h
  • Perth (non-stop): about 7.5 h
  • Los Angeles (non-stop): about 15.5 h
  • London (non-stop): about 13 h
  • Dubai (non-stop): about 8 h

Continue into mainland China

Trains out of West Kowloon reach Guangzhou in under an hour, with onward links to Beijing and Shanghai.

  • China

The Great Wall, the Terracotta Army and Shanghai's skyline.

Get answers for a Hong Kong stopover

How long can I stay in Hong Kong as a visitor?+
It depends on your passport. Australian passport holders, for example, generally don't need a visa for visits under 90 days, and Hong Kong runs immigration rules separate from mainland China. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change. Your travel expert confirms the rules for your passport when you book.
When is typhoon season in Hong Kong?+
Typhoons are most likely between June and September, and a high storm signal can close shops and ferries for a day. Your travel expert builds a spare day into summer stays and keeps your plans flexible.
Is a long weekend enough for Hong Kong?+
Three or four nights covers the harbour, the Peak, the markets of Kowloon and a day on Lantau or Lamma. Add two nights if you want Macau or a morning on the Dragon's Back trail.
Should we stay on Hong Kong Island or in Kowloon?+
Hong Kong Island puts you near Central's restaurants and the Peak Tram, while the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront has the classic view back across the harbour. Many guests split their nights between the two.
Can a Hong Kong stopover break the flight to Europe?+
Yes. Two nights is enough to ride the Star Ferry, eat dim sum in Central and see the harbour lights from a hotel bar. Your travel expert can book the stopover into your long-haul ticket.
Which harbour views suit an anniversary dinner?+
Book a harbour-view table for the nightly light show over Victoria Harbour, or charter a junk for an evening sail. Tell us the date and your travel expert reserves the room and the table to match.
How do we get from the airport into Hong Kong?+
The Airport Express reaches Central in about 24 minutes, though most guests prefer a private car to the hotel door. Your travel expert arranges the transfer to meet your flight.
