Find deep quiet in the Gobi

Step out of your ger in the Gobi at first light and there is nothing between you and the horizon but dunes, gravel plains and a few grazing camels. It is the space that stays with you. A comfortable desert camp gives you a proper bed, hot showers and dinner by the stove, and your guide drives you out to the Flaming Cliffs, where dinosaur eggs were found in the 1920s.

Ulaanbaatar is the gateway, a fast-changing capital with a fine museum of Mongolian history and monasteries still in daily use. In the far west, Olgii and the Altai Mountains are home to Kazakh eagle hunters, who train golden eagles to hunt in winter. Time a summer trip for Naadam in July and you will see the horse races and wrestling the whole country turns out for.

Live the nomad spirit in Mongolia

Guided days take in working monasteries and the dinosaur cliffs of the Gobi.

  • Gandan Monastery

Walk the grounds of Gandan, one of the few monasteries to survive the purges of the 1930s, as monks gather for prayers.

  • The Naadam Festival

Watch Naadam, when the country turns out for horse racing, wrestling and archery.

  • Mongolian music and dance

Watch young performers keep Mongolia's music alive, from throat singing to the horse-head fiddle and traditional dance.

  • The Flaming Cliffs of the Gobi

See the sandstone cliffs of Bayanzag glow red at sunset, where some of the world's first dinosaur eggs were found.

  • Wildlife of the Yol Valley

Walk into the Yol Valley in the Gobi Altai, a narrow green gorge where ice can linger into summer and lammergeiers circle above.

  • A picnic in the mountains

Drive by 4x4 to a lookout on an old volcanic outcrop for a gourmet picnic with wine and views across the desert.

Choose between the Gobi and the Altai

The desert suits a first visit, while the far west brings eagle hunters and high peaks.

  • Ulaanbaatar

The capital, with Gandan Monastery and the National Museum, and the open steppe beginning just beyond the edge of the city.

  • The Gobi Desert

The singing sand dunes of Khongoryn Els, the red Flaming Cliffs and wide gravel plains, explored by four wheel drive.

  • Olgii and the Altai

The far western province of the Kazakh eagle hunters, set below the snowy peaks of the Altai mountains.

Go in Mongolia's short summer

The warm months bring green grass and Naadam, while winter suits only the hardiest travellers.

  • JanuaryAvoid

Deep winter, with temperatures far below freezing across the country.

  • FebruaryAvoid

Still extremely cold, with Lunar New Year celebrated at home with family.

  • MarchAvoid

Cold and windy, with the steppe still brown and frozen.

  • AprilMixed

The thaw begins, but dust storms are common in the Gobi.

  • MayMixed

Warming up, with cold nights and wind on the open steppe.

  • JuneBest

Green steppe, long days and comfortable desert temperatures.

  • JulyBest

Peak summer, with the Naadam festival of wrestling, archery and horse racing.

  • AugustBest

Warm days with some rain on the steppe, ideal for the Gobi and the Altai.

  • SeptemberGood

Clear autumn days and cool nights, with quieter ger camps.

  • OctoberGood

The Golden Eagle Festival in Olgii early in the month, cold elsewhere.

  • NovemberAvoid

Winter returns, with snow and freezing nights.

  • DecemberAvoid

Bitterly cold across the country, outside the travel season.

Connect to Ulaanbaatar via Seoul

Most travellers connect through Seoul or Beijing. Your travel expert finds the best connection from your home airport.

Prepare for remote Mongolia

Can I travel to Mongolia visa-free?+
It depends on your passport. Australian tourists, for example, can currently enter Mongolia without a visa for stays of up to 30 days. Fuel shortages can disrupt domestic flights and road travel, so your travel expert builds spare time into the route. Check your own government's travel advice before you book, as rules change.
Can we visit Mongolia outside summer?+
Yes, if you pack well. Autumn brings golden steppe and the Golden Eagle Festival in Olgii, while winter is very cold and suits only short city stays.
How long does a Gobi and steppe trip take?+
Ten to 14 days covers Ulaanbaatar, the Gobi and the old capital at Kharkhorin, with domestic flights saving the longest drives. Add four or five days for the Altai and the eagle hunters of the far west.
How comfortable are Mongolia's ger camps?+
The best camps have private bathrooms, a stove in each ger and hot showers, while remote ones are simpler. Your travel expert tells you plainly what each night looks like before you book.
What is driving across Mongolia like?+
Many routes are unsealed tracks, so days can be long and bumpy in a four-wheel drive. Our drivers know the land well, and domestic flights shorten the longest legs.
Can we mark a milestone in Mongolia?+
Yes. A private dinner in a ger under the stars or a morning with eagle hunters makes a birthday or anniversary here hard to forget. Tell us the date and we plan it.
How fit do we need to be for Mongolia?+
No special fitness is needed, though horse riding and hikes in the Yol Valley are easier with some practice. Your travel expert can keep the days gentle or add longer walks.
