Get married in Santorini, above the caldera at sunset

Santorini is a small island with a very particular setting: whitewashed villages on a cliff above a flooded volcano, and some of the most photographed sunsets in Europe. That popularity is the point and the challenge. The best ceremony spots and dates go early, and guest numbers are limited by the venues themselves.

Weddings, vow renewals, anniversaries, milestone birthdays and honeymoons, planned by one Wedded Advisor.

See why couples marry in Santorini

  • Caldera views

Santorini sits on the rim of a flooded volcanic caldera, so cliff-top villages such as Oia, Fira and Imerovigli look straight across the water. Few islands give ceremony photos a backdrop this recognisable.

  • Reliable dry summers

Official observatory data shows almost no rain from June to August. Couples planning an outdoor ceremony can plan with real confidence about the weather.

  • Legal weddings possible

Greece allows visitors to marry in a civil ceremony or a religious one, with no residency requirement. Australian, US and UK couples follow a clear paperwork path through their own consular services.

  • Short hop from Athens

Flights from Athens to Santorini take about 50 minutes and run all year. Guests from almost anywhere can reach the island with one extra connection.

  • Wine with a story

The island grows Assyrtiko, a bone-dry white, and makes Vinsanto, a protected sweet wine. Winery tastings give guests a day out that feels local, not generic.

  • History on the doorstep

Akrotiri, a Bronze Age town preserved under volcanic ash, is a short drive from most hotels. It gives guests something real to explore between celebrations.

Choose where you marry on the island

  • On the caldera

Terraces and chapels on the cliff edge, looking west over the water. The sunset setting, with the most demand and the smallest spaces.

  • In the wine country

Santorini's wineries sit on the slopes inland, with ceremony terraces that still look out to sea and more room for guests.

  • In a village

Pyrgos, inland and on a hilltop, is a traditional village with tavernas that host receptions in private halls.

  • By the beach

The south and east coasts have dark-sand beaches and venues for a more relaxed celebration.

Good to know

Arrival airports
Santorini International Airport (JTR), about 6 km from Fira, Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), for long-haul connections
Currency
Euro (EUR)
Tipping
Greek restaurants must give you an itemised bill by law. Tipping is not built into Greek law, so many visitors round up or leave a small amount for good service.
Language
Greek. English is widely used in hotels, restaurants and wedding venues across the island.
Power
Type C and Type F plugs, 230 V, 50 Hz. Australian, US and UK guests need a plug adaptor.
Time zone
Eastern European Time, UTC+2, moving to UTC+3 for European summer time from late March to late October.
Health and safety
Greece carries a risk of earthquakes, summer heat and wildfires from April to October, and a strong seismic swarm hit Santorini in early 2025. Check Smartraveller, the US State Department or the UK FCDO before booking and again before travel, and call 112 in an emergency.

Bring your guests with you

Guests usually reach Santorini through Athens, with a short flight or a ferry across. Hotels on the caldera are small, so rooms for a larger guest list are often spread across several villages.

Your guest list is your leverage. Every room your guests book counts as one reservation, made by one house, on relationships 17 years old.

Marrying legally

Yes: visitors can marry legally in Greece in a civil ceremony led by the mayor or municipality, or in a religious ceremony, with no residency requirement.

  1. Choose a civil ceremony through the Municipality of Thira or a religious ceremony, and ask the officiant or your planner for their exact document list.
  2. Get a Certificate of No Impediment: Australians apply through DFAT or the Australian Embassy in Athens, British nationals through the British Embassy in Athens, and US citizens swear an affidavit before a US consular officer in Greece.
  3. Have your birth certificates, and any divorce or death certificates from earlier marriages, apostilled in your home country.
  4. Arrange official Greek translations through the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs Translation Section or a Greek embassy or consulate abroad.
  5. Publish your intention to marry in a local Greek-language newspaper, or have it posted by the local town hall, before you apply for the licence.
  6. Lodge your documents with the municipality to obtain the marriage licence and confirm the ceremony date.
  7. Hold the ceremony with 2 witnesses present.
  8. Register the marriage at the local civil registry (Lixiarcheio), then order certified copies and an apostille for use at home.

Documents you will usually need

  • Valid passports for both partners
  • Birth certificates with apostille and official Greek translation
  • Certificate of No Impediment, or for US citizens a consular affidavit of marriage
  • Final divorce decree or death certificate if either partner was married before, with apostille and translation
  • Copy of the published wedding notice
  • Details and passports of 2 witnesses
Timing
There is no residency requirement, but the US Embassy in Athens warns the paperwork can take several weeks. Start document requests at least 4 to 6 months out, since apostilles and official translations each add time.
Recognition at home
A marriage that is legally performed and registered in Greece is generally recognised in Australia, the US and the UK without a second ceremony. Keep an apostilled copy of the Greek marriage certificate and confirm any home-country steps with your own government.
The symbolic route
Many couples sign the legal paperwork at home, then hold a symbolic ceremony on Santorini with no Greek documents needed. This frees you to choose any venue, celebrant and time of day.

Requirements change. Your Wedded Advisor confirms the current process for your passports before anything is booked.

Costs

Your Wedded Advisor quotes each venue for your date and guest count, and confirms in writing what is included before you commit.

Your weekend

  • Day 1: Arrival and welcome

Guests land at Santorini airport through the afternoon and settle in. Gather everyone for relaxed drinks on a caldera terrace in time for sunset.

  • Day 2: Island day

Take a group boat out to the Nea Kameni volcano and the caldera, or visit a winery for Assyrtiko and Vinsanto tastings. Keep the evening free for guests to explore Fira or Oia.

  • Day 3: Wedding day

Hold the ceremony in the late afternoon when the heat drops and the light softens over the caldera. Move into dinner and dancing as the sun sets.

  • Day 4: Farewell

Host a long lunch by the sea at Kamari or Perissa before guests start heading home. Couples staying on can visit Akrotiri or Pyrgos at a slower pace.

Things for your guests to do

  • Akrotiri archaeological site. Walk through a Bronze Age town preserved under volcanic ash about 3,600 years ago.
  • Nea Kameni volcano. Take a boat into the caldera and hike across the young volcanic island formed in 1707.
  • Winery tastings. Taste dry Assyrtiko whites and sweet Vinsanto, a protected wine aged in barrels for years.
  • Oia at sunset. Find a spot early on the western cliffs to watch the sun drop into the sea.
  • Fira to Oia walk. Follow the caldera-edge path through Imerovigli for wide views across the water.
  • Black sand beaches. Swim at Kamari or Perissa on the east coast, where the volcanic sand is dark.
  • Pyrgos village. Wander the lanes of an inland hilltop village with views over the whole island.
  • Ancient Thera. Climb to the ruins of the island's ancient city on the ridge above Kamari.
