Wedding suits follow the dress code and the date before they follow your taste. A lounge suit (what Americans call a business suit) fits most daytime and destination weddings, morning dress belongs to a formal daytime church wedding, and black tie means a dinner suit, which New York calls a tuxedo. In Sydney, bespoke at J.H. Cutler takes about six months for a new client and starts at A$13,000, while P Johnson's Sartoria K is made to measure in 6 to 8 weeks from A$4,195, so the calendar often chooses for you.
If you're the partner helping to choose, settle the dress code and the timeline before anything else. The Wedded Concierge arranges guest rooms and travel for weddings at home or abroad.
Everyone in the wedding party dresses at the level the invitation sets. Print the words plainly ("lounge suit", "morning dress" or "black tie"), because guests read "formal" in very different ways.
Debrett's calls lounge suits the smartest of the informal dress codes. It's the right answer for a daytime ceremony, a vineyard reception and most weddings abroad, including a Lake Como wedding that runs into dinner.

Debrett's treats morning dress as traditional at weddings and says not to specify it for events starting after 6pm. That means a black or grey single-breasted morning coat with peaked lapels, grey or striped trousers, a buff, grey or duck-egg blue waistcoat, a tie rather than a cravat, and highly polished black shoes that aren't patent.

Debrett's black tie is exact. Wear a dinner jacket with silk peaked lapels or a shawl collar, trousers with a single row of braid, a hand-tied black bow tie and a white evening shirt with a marcella bib, studs and double cuffs. Add a cummerbund or a waistcoat, never both, and black polished or patent shoes.

The Black Tux says the groom wears the tuxedo at black tie optional, and the wedding party sits at the formal end. Favourbrook places the ivory dinner jacket at summer and warm-weather weddings, worn with black trousers. On a Dubai beach in January, where 14°C and a sea breeze keep jackets on, choose midnight and keep ivory for nights warm enough for shirt sleeves.

At a reception in the Gulf where some men wear the kandura and bisht, our advice is to keep your suits at the same formality and in a quiet, dark tone, so the photographs read as one wedding.

Bespoke means a paper pattern drafted for you, then several fittings over 8 weeks to six months at the London, New York and Sydney houses below. Made to measure adjusts a house pattern to your measurements, often with one fitting once the suit is made, in 3 to 12 weeks. Custom tailoring is a third, faster route. In Dubai, House of Tailors quotes 10 to 14 days for a custom tailored suit and about 3 to 4 weeks for bespoke.

Ask this in the showroom, because it explains part of the gap between two suits that look alike on the hanger. Mond sets out the three builds:
Fused: The layers of the jacket front are joined with adhesive instead of stitching.
Half canvas: A canvas runs from the upper chest down to about the midsection.
Full canvas: The canvas runs all the way down to the hem.
P Johnson says its full floating canvas is stitched rather than glued, so the jacket moulds to you as you wear it. For a wedding suit you plan to keep, ask for full canvas.
Bespoke earns its fittings when you have four to six months and a build a house pattern struggles with, such as sloping shoulders or a big drop from chest to waist. At Huntsman, the cutter takes more than 28 measurements and your first fitting is a baste, a partly built garment on which the shoulder and balance can still change. Ask any tailor quoting a short lead time whether the first fitting is a baste, because a near-finished suit can mostly only be taken in.

P Johnson offers four shoulder expressions, an unpadded one among them, single or double breasted fronts, and peak, notch or shawl lapels in a standard or wider width. For a warm afternoon that runs into dinner, our advice is a single breasted jacket with a soft, unpadded shoulder on a canvassed front, so you keep a clean chest in the photographs without padding you'd feel by 4pm. We'd keep a built, padded shoulder for the sharper line of a dinner jacket at night.

A double breasted jacket is cut to be worn buttoned, so keep it for a cooler evening. We'd choose lapel width by your build, not the season, with the wider lapel for broad shoulders. Moss places the fully unstructured jacket, with no canvas or padding, at casual occasions, so keep it for the rehearsal dinner.
Fix the date the finished suit must be in your hands, then work backwards. For a wedding abroad, that date sits before your flight, not before the ceremony. Book the first appointment this far ahead:
Bespoke at J.H. Cutler in Sydney: six months for a new client, with fittings four to six weeks apart.
Bespoke at Huntsman in London: 14 to 16 weeks.
Bespoke at Michael Andrews in New York: 10 to 12 weeks on a first order.
Bespoke at Cad & The Dandy in London: 8 to 10 weeks.
Made to measure at P Johnson: 6 to 8 weeks for Sartoria K, 3 to 6 weeks for Pronto.
Made to measure at Oscar Hunt: four to six weeks from first fitting to collection.

A Sydney groom marrying at Lake Como in mid September and flying in early September needs the suit by early August. Count back eight weeks for Sartoria K, add a fortnight's buffer, and the first P Johnson appointment falls in late May. Groomsmen in London order that same week, on the same cloth. Bring a swatch of your partner's outfit to that first appointment, and keep your weight steady until the last fitting.
Henry Poole fits in New York and Huntsman holds a Dubai trunk show, but each fitting waits for the next visit unless you fly to London. Order your second suit that way, not the one you marry in.
Choose for the coolest hour of the night, not the season's name. Lake Como in September drops to about 12°C at night, and UAE nights in January average 11.6 to 15.2°C, according to the National Centre of Meteorology.

Choose a high twist wool, not linen. Huddersfield Fine Worsteds describes Fresco as porous, breathable and crease resistant, a cloth that doesn't crumple the way linen does. Its Fresco Lite weighs 9oz, about 280g a metre on Holland & Sherry's conversion, in Fox Air's summer and travel band, and it's the one to ask for before a long-haul flight. A wool, silk and linen blend, such as the Loro Piana cloth Hall Madden describes, suits a daytime ceremony, but Fresco is safer late at night.
For black tie on a Dubai beach, ask for wool and mohair. Holland & Sherry describes its 230g English Mohair as cool to wear and suited to humid weather, so for a January breeze ask which heavier weights the tailor holds. An October barn in upstate New York or an English marquee calls for Fox City's three-season band, with an overcoat for the walk between ceremony and barn.

Gieves & Hawkes calls navy or mid-grey the most versatile foundation, and says navy photographs beautifully in natural and artificial light, so it carries a 4pm lakeside ceremony into a candlelit dinner. At black tie, Luxury London suggests the darkest midnight, because phone cameras lighten blues.

Wear the same cloth as the groomsmen or ushers, made as a three-piece, so the waistcoat keeps you dressed when the jacket comes off on a terrace. At black tie, a shawl collar against their peaked lapels does the same job. In morning dress every man already wears a waistcoat, so give yours a different colour, duck-egg against their grey, or change the tie. Match your buttonhole to your partner's flowers and keep the rest plain.

Order one cloth at once, have each man fitted where he lives, and put the plan in writing. These houses dress whole wedding parties:
P Johnson sees wedding parties in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, New York, London and Jakarta, with trunk shows across Australia, North America and Asia.
Oscar Hunt runs group fittings at its showrooms in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart.
Suitsupply schedules group fittings for a whole wedding party across its US and international stores.
THEODORE, one of the brands at Wedded World Melbourne, makes whole wedding parties to measure in Zegna or Dormeuil cloth.

Before you order, ask the house to confirm in writing that an order placed in one country can be fitted and altered in another. Suitsupply's Mall of the Emirates store quotes up to three days for complex alterations, so have groomsmen land days before the wedding, not the night before. Give each man one written schedule with his flight, his fitting, delivery to the hotel and a fallback if a fitting runs late. For timelines and the best man, see our answers to common groomsmen attire questions.
If you specify the outfit, plan to cover it, or at least the shared pieces. At lounge suit level, each man can wear his own navy or charcoal suit with the tie and buttonhole you give him. Our guide to hiring or buying groomsmen suits weighs the formal routes. If the ushers hire grey while yours is made, hold a cutting of your cloth against theirs by a window before you commit.
Made to measure starts well below bespoke in every city. Each price comes from the house's own page, checked in October 2026:
Sydney (AUD): Made to measure from A$1,195 at Oscar Hunt; bespoke from A$13,000 at J.H. Cutler.
Dubai (AED): Made to measure from AED 1,450 at House of Tailors; bespoke from AED 2,800 at White Stripes Tailoring.
New York (USD): Made to measure from US$995 and bespoke from US$2,995 at Michael Andrews.
London (GBP): Made to measure from £899 at King & Allen; bespoke from £7,500 at Huntsman.
Settle these small things before the morning:
Book the venue's pressing service well before the week of the wedding.
For a wedding abroad, fold the jacket at the shoulders into a garment bag, carry it on board and hang it as soon as you arrive.
Lay out every waistcoat, tie and buttonhole together the day before.
At black tie, pack a spare evening shirt and a spare set of studs.
Fix the dress code and the date the suit must be in your hands, and the rest follows. Your Wedded Advisor at the Wedded Concierge plans guest travel and rooms, with a private booking link for guests, so you can time the groomsmen's or ushers' arrival around the final fitting. For a wedding abroad, vendors in more than one country are managed together, with currency and international payments coordinated. Compare suppliers for the rest of the day on the Wedded Marketplace.
