Regional dishes change from north to south, so a cooking class or night market becomes a shared outing.
Usually no for two visiting foreigners: the US Embassy says Vietnamese law does not regulate marriages between two non-Vietnamese citizens unless at least one holds a Vietnamese residence permit, and Vietnam does not recognise same-sex marriage.
The steps, in order:
1. Check that you qualify: one partner must be a Vietnamese citizen or a foreigner with a Vietnamese permanent or temporary residence permit. 2. Get proof of single status: australians apply for a Certificate of No Impediment at the Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City. US citizens sign an affidavit of single status at the US Embassy or Consulate, and UK nationals make an affirmation at the British Consulate-General. 3. Legalise your home-country documents: UK documents, including any decree absolute or death certificate, go to the FCDO Legalisation Office and then the Vietnamese Embassy in London. 4. Arrange translations: a notary office in Vietnam translates foreign-language documents. Bring a health certificate if the local office asks for one. 5. Lodge the marriage dossier: lodge it in person with the People's Committee where the Vietnamese or resident partner lives. Since July 2025, ward and commune offices handle marriages with foreigners. 6. Wait, then sign the register: the civil status officer checks the file, which can take up to 15 days after a complete dossier. Then attend together to sign the register and collect your marriage certificate.
