Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Habarana
Day 2 · Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Habarana
An early start for the Dambulla cave temple, a pilgrimage site of five painted caves holding more than 150 statues. Continue to the ruined medieval capital of Polonnaruwa: the Royal Palace, the Lotus Bath, the Watadage and the rock-cut Buddhas of the Gal Vihara beside a vast royal reservoir. Overnight in Habarana.
Sigiriya and Kandy
Day 3 · Sigiriya and Kandy
Climb the fifth-century Lion Rock, rising almost 200 metres above the forest, through the stone lion's paws to the citadel ruins on top. In the afternoon, a tour of Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth, then a cultural show in the evening.
Ella
Day 4 · Ella
Visit a tea estate and factory to follow the leaf from picking to grading, with a tasting of Ceylon tea. Continue through the hills to Ella.
Day 5 · Ella
Take in the view through Ella Gap across deep green valleys to the far mountains, then walk to the Nine Arches Bridge among the forest and tea. The afternoon is free at your hotel.
Tissamaharama and Yala
Day 6 · Tissamaharama and Yala
Drive south to Tissamaharama and check in. In the afternoon, a jeep safari in Yala National Park, home to leopards, sloth bears, elephants, deer and many birds.
Yala and Galle
Day 7 · Yala and Galle
Take a packed breakfast on an early safari in Yala, then drive along the coast to Galle. Walk the ramparts and grid of streets inside the Dutch fort, past the old gate, the Zwart Bastion and the lighthouse.
Bentota or Wadduwa
Day 8 · Bentota or Wadduwa
A short drive up the coast to your beach hotel near Bentota or Wadduwa, with the rest of the day free.
Day 9 · Bentota or Wadduwa
A free day by the sea.
Colombo
Day 10 · Colombo
Breakfast, then a transfer to Colombo airport for your flight.
