Negombo
Day 1 · Negombo
You are met at the airport for the short drive to Negombo. The rest of the day is free for the beach or the fish market, with dinner at your hotel.
Habarana
Day 2 · Habarana
A tour of Negombo takes in the lagoon, the Dutch canal built for the cinnamon trade, the old fort and St Mary's church in a town often called Little Rome. Continue to the Silver Temple at Ridigama, sheltered under a great boulder, and on to Habarana.
Kandy
Day 3 · Kandy
Climb Sigiriya, the fifth-century rock citadel, passing the lion paws, the frescoes and the mirror wall. Stop at a spice garden in Matale, then reach Kandy for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the market and an evening of Kandyan dance and drumming.
Day 4 · Kandy
Spend the morning in the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, a former royal pleasure garden with an orchid house and a giant Javan fig. The rest of the day is at your own pace in Kandy.
Nuwara Eliya
Day 5 · Nuwara Eliya
Climb into the misty hills and stop at a tea estate and factory to see how Ceylon tea is made, finishing with a fresh cup. Continue to Nuwara Eliya for the night.
Day 6 · Nuwara Eliya
A tour of the old British hill retreat and its surrounds, along winding roads through tea estates and past waterfalls, with time for a walk above the town.
Yala
Day 7 · Yala
Drive south to Yala National Park for a private jeep safari. The park is known for elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer and birdlife, and for one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere.
Hikkaduwa
Day 8 · Hikkaduwa
Watch the stilt fishermen at Koggala and visit the Martin Wickramasinghe museum, then walk the streets and ramparts of Galle's Dutch fort before checking in at Hikkaduwa.
Day 9 · Hikkaduwa
Take a boat along the Madu River at Balapitiya, through mangrove channels to a small island temple. Afterwards visit the turtle hatchery at Kosgoda to learn about its conservation work.
Colombo
Day 10 · Colombo
Drive north to Colombo. Time allowing, visit Gangaramaya temple and browse around Independence Square before your transfer to the airport.
