Spend the day walking the capital. Begin with a short harbour cruise, ride the lift to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for the noon gun salute and the view to the Three Cities, then visit St John's Co-Cathedral with its painted vault and Caravaggio's Beheading of St John the Baptist.
Mdina
Day 3 · Mdina
Visit the basilica at Mosta, whose great dome survived a bomb that pierced it in 1942. Watch glassblowers at the Ta' Qali crafts village, then walk the walled city of Mdina and its 17th-century St Paul's Cathedral.
Marsaxlokk
Day 4 · Marsaxlokk
Drive to Vittoriosa, one of the oldest towns on the island, to walk the waterfront and visit the Inquisitor's Palace. Continue south to Marsaxlokk, a fishing village full of painted boats with a seafront market on Sundays.
Sliema
Day 5 · Sliema
Look down on the Blue Grotto from the plateau above Wied iz-Zurrieq, then visit the World Heritage temples of Hagar Qim on their hilltop above the sea and the islet of Filfla. End at Dingli Cliffs, more than 250 metres above the sea.
Gozo
Day 6 · Gozo
Take the ferry across to Gozo for the Ggantija temples, among the oldest free-standing temples in the world, and the sanctuary of Ta' Pinu. Stop at the bay of Xlendi, explore the Cittadella above Victoria, and finish at Dwejra Bay and its caves before the ferry back.
