Day 2 · Valletta
Leave the car and spend the day walking the capital. Start with a short harbour cruise, ride the lift up to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for the noon gun salute and the view to the Three Cities, then visit St John's Co-Cathedral and Caravaggio's Beheading of St John the Baptist.
Mdina
Day 3 · Mdina
Drive inland to Mosta and its basilica, whose dome survived a bomb that pierced it in 1942. Watch glassblowers at the Ta' Qali crafts village, then walk the walled city of Mdina and its 17th-century St Paul's Cathedral.
Marsaxlokk
Day 4 · Marsaxlokk
Drive to Vittoriosa, one of the oldest towns on the island, to walk the waterfront and visit the Inquisitor's Palace. Continue south to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, its harbour full of painted boats and, on Sundays, a market along the front.
Sliema
Day 5 · Sliema
A last breakfast, then drive to the airport to return your car.
